The Diaphragm and Core Stability
So have been learning about the role the diaphragm has in back pain and it’s opened up all kinds of interesting stuff.
If it’s out if balance or spasmed it can cause all kinds of back pain. But! If it’s used correctly and strengthened it can be a great core stabilizer and really increase performance. Really made me think about why things like yoga and Pilates are so effective:breath focused with movement! Even just deep breathing exercises are so helpful.
Muscle wise, the diaphragm is really closely connected to the psoas which tends to be super tight/in spasm. Well if you’re not breathing properly, all the stretching in the world won’t lengthen the psoas cuz it’s attached to that inflexible diaphragm!
Also makes sense as to why we breathe out when we go up into an invert. The job of the psoas is to bring the trunk to the legs, so it makes sense that our best and healthiest bet is to let the diaphragm relax while we put our psoas to work!
