We have a photographer coming to our studio at the end of September and I’ve booked a session with him. I’m excited but a bit concerned. My moves are very much beginner level but I really want some photos that I can be proud of and show off so I’d like something in there that people not in the know might think was a bit fancy and not just floor poses.

What do you think would look good? Can you give me some ideas and some photos if you have them so that I can pop them on my pole inspiration pinterest board (so please only let me have photos you’re happy for me to post there, otherwise I’ll google pics).

Here’s where I’m at to give you an idea of skill level – I can pole sit, climb, CKR, embrace (just!) and wrist seat. Only got my invert once so nothing fancy going on there. I’m happy to work on moves so throw them at me!

Martini sit is pretty… I googled it and found this pic on tumblr…. I feel like she looks familiar though. Sorry someone if I stole your pic.

If you’re comfortable in an elbow stand there are a bunch of leg variations to make it pretty. (I screen shotted this from Instagram, leaving the name for credit)

Oh yes, that’s pretty. We do a variation of that (with extended leg round the back – any idea what it’s called?) so I could certainly get that one nailed before then. I’ve not done the elbow stand yet but I could definitely have a go.

There are all kinds of options from a pole sit for example. Try legs extended, cross the legs, one leg bent, two bent, come around the pole with the body in sit or shoot from behind while in sit and look over the shoulder!

If you remember to fully extend you legs in what ever pose you choose and point the foot it makes everything look better. Don’t forget to breath so your face is more natural 😖

Besides the moves & poses I do want to recommend you be conscious of the lighting. Photography is all about light. I have done quite a few fitness & bodybuilder shoots. Depending how lighting is setup and your positioning will greatly affect the pictures. If you can watch others being photographed first, you will see which way causes too much shadows or can make use of the shadows. Then speak to the photographer to get the angle of the pose that you want.
Notice in the pics AllysonKendal posted while the poses are fine the lighting I consider poor.

I must blogged about this recently for United Pole Artists. 🙂
Simple poses like leg hangs, hood ornament, handstands tend to photograph beautifully because you can control your lines and shapes and camera angles so much better. You want to make your outcomes as predictable as possible. http://unitedpoleartists.blogspot.com/2014/06/ready-for-your-closeup-how-to-prep-for.html

My profile pic is one I had taken when I was coming off of an injury and I couldn’t do to many things for my first photo shoot – if you go to my photo’s I have a few other poses there that were off pole things if you need a few ideas, I did include a wrist sit and a helicoper invert ( not pictured under my photo’s) but they made pretty good pics. Have fun, it’s a BLAST!!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I’d been thinking about poses but I hadn’t given too much thought to the angle, lighting etc because I assumed that the photographer would do that, but I’ll definitely have a look into it and go in with some ideas now that you’ve mentioned it.
