I have been working on an invert for nearly eight months. At first I thought I was just not strong enough so I went to the gym and started using the chin up machines. I have also been using free weights in addition to pole. I guess I want to know how do you know if it is a strength problem (just not ready yet) versus a form (strong enough but not doing it right) problem. I have studied YouTube, Veenas lessons, and watched people in my class. One instructor told me that since I can do other strength moves such as a pencil hold but not an invert I may never get it and I should be ok with it. I am trying to accept that position but so many more moves can come from the invert so I really want to get it. Thoughts?

It took me a really, really long time to get my basic invert, and right now it’s still not great. I have a difficult time with that kind of strength, and I have a difficult time with the upside-down, so there are definitely some mental barriers, but… I did still get it!
What changed it for me was not focusing on my feet. I had to learn to focus on my chest, my hips, something other than my feet. I also learned to make a HUGE arc with my legs! Like, almost reaching forward with my feet and allowing that momentum to carry me upwards.
Have you seen Aerial Amy’s blog? She covers a lot of the issued with basic inverts, and many of them were things I had issues with.

I think that you can do it. All you need to do is work on it, be patient, make sure not to jump or put strain on your back or shoulders. Breathe.

It took me five years. 😉

Can you make a video for us? We could check to see if there’s just something you’re missing. While I would say inverting isn’t right for everyone. I also wouldn’t say someone will Never invert. 💜

It took me two years to get a V invert so keep at it. For me it was completely a form issue which stemmed from me not wanting to put my head back because I didn’t trust my own strength.

Just keep at it, keep trying different techniques and keep working on core strength as it’s as important if not more important as upper body strength for inverts.

Veena definately had the right idea though; upload a video so we can see exactly what’s happening and give feedback and advice!

“May never get it”??? That’s really provocative… Forget that and listen to those for whom it
has taken long. I’m sure you’ll get it.
