Any ideas on where to buy a reasonably priced crash mat or some type of alternative? Also, what should I look for in a mat? I am almost certain I can’t just walk into a local store and find something. I am a beginner and know there is a huge possibility of falling. I don’t have my pole yet but am hoping to get it this week.

    Thanks

Cheap alternatives: couch cushions, baby mattresses, large pillows, foam tiles. I hate that crash mats are so expensive and so crap-ily made. Every one that I have ever seen had started ripping at the seams almost immediately. If you are worried about shifting pillows you can buy some velcro and attach the pillows together.

On the crib mattresses…if you get the ones that are for toddlers too then one side is all plastic so easy to clean the sweat/product/etc 🙂 I dunno if all crib mattresses come with two sides but it’s been handy

You can also cover cushions and pillows with a big heavy duvet or quilt. Sofa cushions covered with yoga mats and quilts and blankets etc can be good too

This might be a stupid idea, but what about buying a mattress topper (they come in different thicknesses) and cutting it halfway through so that it can be slipped in around the pole? You can get a 5″ thick, full sized one for $119 on Amazon.

Might not be ideal for those with limited space…but for those people who have the space?

while anything is better than nothing I think mattress toppers have too much give and will not protect you from harder/higher falls.

you can also go to Joann Fabrics (or similar craft/sewing store) and get the 4/5″ foam they sell for making cushions and cover that.

We just purchased the Pole-O-Mat (through Mighty Grip) and I am VERY happy with the construction. It’s only 5′ diameter which for me is fine when spotting someone but for someone practicing alone I’d advise at least 6′

Sounds like a good idea to me. I would have think about the space issue – I live in a small apartment but, if I cut it into fourths, I could attach with Velcro and it allow for easier storage.

I purchased the Pole-O-Mat from the Canadian Amazon.ca site. Pink 2″ round. It works great for my 50mm x-pole. I only have 8″ ceiling so 2″ crash is perfect. That was the only one they had in Canada. There are a lot available on the USA Amazon.com site. Copy and paste link below

or just search “dance pole mats all departments”

    Hope that helps,

Did you buy foam and I am assuming you bought 2. Did you attach them to each other or do you have them on each side of the pole? Forgive me if my question sounds stupid.
