    Hi everyone,

So I have been having a lot of trouble lately with getting too far in my head while choreographing my routine. I am competing for the first time in April. I have choreographed 2 routines before, but for our studio’s showcases. The last one I did was in October, and I was extremely stressed and anxious about that one as well. I hated what I came up with. Now, I am seeing myself going down that path again and I don’t want to be that anxious because it does not help! I have been freestyling, trying combos, etc. and recording each time. I get so upset because I think it looks horrible. I have not been able to stick ANY moves, even the ones I have done so many times that I can do them with my eyes closed. Anybody been in this situation before? I feel defeated and I cant pick myself up out of this funk. Help me overcome this! How did you get over your choreography stress?

I don’t know if this is an option for you but sometimes when I get stuck in a rut I just need a song change. This happened to me last month, I was trying to put together something for my level 1 students and it just wasn’t working for me. I spent weeks trying to make it work and I just couldn’t come up with anything i liked and it was just really stressful. I changed the song and completed 2/3 of it in 30 minutes!

I am working on 3 performance pieces for shows this month and next. At first I listen to my music and try to hear/see moves come together. Then I write down the combos I think will fit and decide where in the music they will go. Once I get the combos in I work on my beginnings and endings. And finally I add transitions. If a combo doesn’t work I rework it until it does. I only film once it have it all choreographed then I can see where to adjust.. I try to focus on drawing the audience in to my performance, it keeps the nerves at bay. Hope this helps!?

Great tip on changing my song. I changed it and I automatically came up with a minute of choreography. I feel like I need to film every time in case I make up something I really like but then I can’t remember it. I wonder if filming every time might be making me more nervous. I’m getting to the point that I don’t even have the strength to do ANY moves or tricks. I don’t know if it’s weight gain and I can’t lift myself up or if it is because I’m tired. I’m going to take a couple of days off and see if it is just body fatigue. This is so nerve wracking!

I’m so glad you’re starting to get somewhere. Let us know how it goes when you get back at it in a couple days. ☺

I get nervous all the time! Not just for group performances but also solos. Here are some tips that work for me… first find the song and you need to LOVE it! Listen to it a few times and image what type of story you are trying to tell with those lyrics. Try to come up with either the beginning or the end and one trick. Doesn’t mean a whole minute. For example, right now I just finished my routine I’m going to perform in 2 weeks. I started off with just sliding up and down the pole with my silks. That’s all I needed to get inspired. Once you have a few things, record it. Even if it doesn’t look good. Keep adding. Once you have something you can always go back and change it. But if you keep changing it, you’ll never get there. We are are worst critic.
