  • Twisted? Split? Bracket? Confused!

I spent the first year of my pole journey in a studio. Then the studio closed and since then I’ve been poling almost exclusively at home. I’m at the point where I am doing extended butterflies and starting ayeshas, and I realized that I have no idea about grips. I’ve always just done it one way. Now I’m scared that I’ve doing the twisted grip which I’ve read isn’t really that safe, especially for beginners. Can someone explain (preferably with pictures!) the difference? As in how it looks when you’re upside down in a en extended butterfly or Ayesha or something similar — not how it looks on the ground prior to a handspring? Or can I upload a photo of me in one of those moves and someone can tell me what grip I’m used? THANK YOU 🙂

Split grip and Bracket grip are the same, just different names. If you could upload a pic, that would be most helpful in determining and explaining the grips. I’m curious myself on twisted grip and how much difference there is from regular split grip. I was just going to post a question on it!

Ok I tried to upload an extended butterfly with this — let’s see if it works! What about true grip and cup grip? Are those two the same thing? I know what cup grip is, just not sure if true grip is something else! Thanks a bunch.

That is a regular split grip. Yes, cup and true grip are the same also. Veena has a Gallery that shows all the grips, if you wanna check that out. Nice Extended butterfly!!!

Ok awesome — that’s what I was hoping 🙂 I’ll definitely look at that gallery. Thanks so much!

She’s right. Thats a split grip not a twisted. But don’t be scared of twisted! If you have been poling over a year you’re hardly a beginner just take it slow

Check out the gallery here for grips and holds pics 😊 You’ll also find the related lesson listed there as well. https://www.studioveena.com/galleries

Thanks! I did look at them, but I have trouble looking at pictures that are upright to understand what my hands and arms are doing when I’m upside down — for some reason my brain doesn’t work that way 🙂

Kathryn, you can also look at the more advanced pics, so see grips while inverted, you will not find any twisted grip photos as I do not feel this grip is the best option. You will find detailed video in the lessons for grips.

True and cup grip are the same, Bracket and split grip are usually interchangeable terms as well. Twisted grip is best to use when inverted and up on the pole. Kicking from standing in Twisted grip is not the best option.

I’m with you! It took me a while to really understand the grips and their differences. Butterfly Is one of those moves where split grips feels more “twisted” then you’d think it’s supposed to (cause it feels different then doing it upright), but twisted grip is a whole other flip of the wrist… The is some floor work that I think TG world well for… But other than that I haven’t really tried it. But just doing it on the pole standing upright not having it support my weight, well as the other grips, just to feel the difference really helped me. 😊 Even if you don’t want to use the grip it’s just helpful.

Kathryn Anne, is your thumb wrapped around the pole on the opposite side from the rest of your fingers? When I do the cup grip, my hand is truly like a cup, as if I were going to drink water out of my hand. When I do a cup grip handspring, my thumb of my top hand is next to my pointer finger.

No it’s not a cup grip. I was wondering if the pic was twisted or split. I know what cup grip is (and now I know it’s also called true grip!) 🙂
