I teach a pole choreography class but was thinking I want to mix it up and have them work on freestyle. Any tips/exercises? I was thinking of giving them 4-5 moves and have them create their own transitions to different styles of music

We have done this on several occasions at my studio where you start with one person and then each person adds a move to the routine, Each time a new move is added you start from the beginning. It is a nice way to maybe think if transitions and moves you don’t normally do and each person gets a “say” in the routine.

You should check out Finding your Freestyle! Some of their earlier videos on Youtube are great challenges for getting used to freestyling, and changing things up.

Another thing they do is mirroring. It helps if the studio is set up to work this way but basically the students face each other and one is the performer and the other is the mirror. You have to mirror what the performer is doing.

One thing I used to love about S factor is that they dedicated a portion of class to freestyle where one person was on the main pole and then they had 2 back up dancers. You brought your song loaded and ready to go and the instructor plugged in your ipod/player for your dance. This way either you had a song that you wanted to dance out or you got to move to a song that maybe was not your style.
