Hello! frustrated with my short pole at my house, i asked my grandmother if I could set a pole up at her house and she said yes! she has 12ft ceilings, so needless to say i am very excited. However, I feel it may be best to use a permanent mount because the ceilings are so high. I already got the pole i will be using (40mm brass) but now I am thinking I should go ahead and order the permanent mount just to be on the safe side. My question is, how do you ensure that the permanent mount is screwed into the joist/beam? The pole will be going in a first floor room, so there isn’t an attic that i could go in and make sure. I’ve read that often times the permanent mount is too wide to fit all of the screws in a ceiling joist? If anyone could give me some tips or help clear this up i would be very thankful! I have had my current pole fall down while i was in a very fast pretzel spin, and it scared the crap out of me and I can only imagine how much more disastrous it would be if i was 12ft high in the air when that happened.

I had a contractor who did some odd jobs for me – one of which was installing my perm mounts. While he did reinforce from the attic I think you could still have someone come out to quote you and decide if the project is safe and how to go about it. An insured contractor won’t move forward with something that’s not safe for you. You could also try calling XPole for recommend installation. I know it’s hard to get a hold of them but once they answer they should be able to help. I think they even note on their website to contact them if the pole is that high. Good luck!!

You can email X-pole with questions, I have gotten very good/useful responses from them this way, usually within a day. I’ve recently had a similar conversation with them. The permanent mounts are 4″ x 7″, so wider than most ceiling joists. I recommend you contact them about your exact situation, especially with the 12′ ceilings. That said, what they recommend I do in a similar situation is have a contractor attach a wood block to the joists (which are metal and only a little over an inch wide in my case) and then attach the permanent mount to the wood block. A piece of 3×6 cut just over 7″ long works well.

Also, I’m not sure what the ceiling limit is on a standard home X-pole (I know it’s listed on their website), but their studio poles can be used with higher ceilings, and since you special order the pole with only the parts you need, they actually cost less than the home pole kits.

I agree call pole, 12 feet seems like it might not be ideal for the brass 40. I have my brass 40 at just under 10 right now and there’s a lot of give! It’s not hard to install the permanent mount as long as you can find the joist. I love my permanent mount!!!

The permanent mount is a wonderful thing! Mine is slightly too wide for the wooden beam it sits on but the screws are within the width of the beam so it’s still completely safe. It makes such a huge difference having something dependable & strong above your head.

so i called xpole and decided to get the permanent mount. They said the pressure mounted dome would still be safe but i should avoid doing “anything too crazy” on it. So I decided to just go ahead and get the permanent mount for piece of mind’s sake. They also said that while a build a pole would be ideal in this situation, the regular home pole is still very safe, especially with the permanent mount. the reason i didn’t go with the buildapole in the first place is because they don’t make them in 40mm brass. but i feel good about all of this so far! I guess the next step is to contact someone who could install the permanent mount. How should i go about finding one of these contractors that could do this? any ideas? and any idea on what to expect cost-wise?

Just so you’re aware when I had my brass 40 set up at 10 ft and on spin, (permanent mount) a friend came over and she did one spinning invert and it warped my pole 😬 I tend to dance gracefully and I’m light so I didn’t have an issue until someone who used more force tried my pole. Something to keep in mine when you dance if you get a brass pole and use it at that height.

You can contact liscensed/insured contractors and handymen on Angie’s list. You could find the same type of people in newspapers or crsigslist but do your due diligence. From my experience it’s not cheap but I also had more than one installed and they had to go through the attic etc. You should be able to get a free quote and can decide if it’s worth it. To me it was worth the price for safety.

    Hi EtheralPole-

You can always call X-Pole or email us at info@xpoleus.com with any questions about our product.
For the permanent mounts you will need to check out the beam- it needs to be at least 4×7 or 5×8 wide for you to drill all 4 screw holes to the beam. If the beam is a 2×4, you will need to reinforce the beam with plywood. You can either drill the plywood on either side or you can drill a 2 inch thick 5×8 piece of plywood to the beam all along the center of the beam and then drill the mount to the wood. I definitely recommend the permanent mount for anything over 12ft.

Any questions just shoot us an email! Thanks!

Veena, omg that is awful! i currently use a brass 38mm so I now it can sometimes be an issue for some people, but I have yet to have any issues! At the higher height, I could see it being more of a problem, but I am also very light and I (hopefully) won’t have any issues! I will definitely keep it in mind though 🙂

And thanks stephanie! I spoke with you guys the other day, and I did get the permanent mount. just waiting for it to arrive! 🙂
