Hi sexy ladies! I’m currently training for a deadlift and I’m sure we all know the struggle 😅. Currently I’m able to do it only twice in a span of 2 weeks and lose it again. Normal for a hard move, I know. But what I wanna ask is, is it normal if I have this pain in the inside of my shoulder? It’s not painful enough to make me cringe but it’s more like a tired muscle, although I have let it rest for a week everytime I want to attempt a deadlift, that part would make a sound each time I’m trying to lift my butt up when my butt is halfway through the deadlift, and of course being a scaredycat that I am, hearing a part of my body making clicking sounds is… well, scary. Anyone else has the same problem?

That should not happen. Which shoulder is hurting? The upper arm or the lower arm? Which grip are you using to accomplish your deadlift (cup, twisted, or true)? Are you making sure that you maintain a slight bend in your lower arm?

I’m going to assume we’re taking about an ayasha or some kind of twisted or true grip lift. Deadlifting regardless of which grip you choose is very strenuous on the body, it can take years to develop the strength to do these things without risking injury. Even then, it can take a toll on the body. If you feel sharpe pain, (muscle soreness a day after is normal) sudden, stabbing, numbness or tingling means something isn’t right. If you’re feeling pain while going through the motion that’s a big red flag to stop. Don’t continue to deadlift for now, it might be a good idea to rest for a few days, then work on conditioning for the shoulders and focus on other strength based work, THEN slow see if your body will allow you to work on them again.

The pain is in my upper arm and I’m using a twisted grip. It even ‘tickles’ (in a not good way) when I’m only in the position of twisting my body sideways and sometimes there’s a clicking sound on the shoulder. It’s fine when I’m doing handspring though. But handspring doesn’t require as much strength on the shoulder as deadlift does, I assume.

You need to stop using that grip for a while!!! The TG grip isn’t right for everyone. I hope it feels better soon!

Thanks Veena! Do you have any videos for shoulder conditioning preparing for the twisted grip deadlift? Truth is I have stopped using twisted grip for a while back but everytime I do it again it will make the exact same pain. So this isn’t normal? 😂😂😂

Its been so long I can’t remember…but I do recall a clicking sound in my shoulder from time to time when I was still learning. And tendonitis in my lower arm that cleared up. Your technique is probably wrong. I would suggest taking a break for a day or two, then recording yourself doing the move to see what you are doing wrong. Thats if the pain is annoying but bearable. If its really bad though, I would suggest stopping practice for on your tg deadlift for at least a few weeks, doing other moves (like the twisted grip handspring with less and less momentum and holding the iron x). You can also try the cup grip, but personally I hate this grip. Some people love it and it might be healthier for you.

Just remember to really be careful though because if it does happen, a shoulder injury takes a long time to recover. I was very aggressive with my body when I was learning but somehow got lucky and was not injured. I would not necessarily recommend that to others.

Yawningcat, you can find all kinds of conditioning and mobility work for the shoulders in the conditioning and the stretching section. The pain is not normal, as in it’s not OK, pain and injury is common. Joint pain isn’t something to ignore.

I’m totally agree with Veena and I don’t work with tg deadlift from the the ground. But how could I work on this move; it’s very hard with cup grip! I saw all the video on youtube but nothing help me! Merci!

I don’t deadlift from any grip right now, my shoulders are not ok with all of the stress. 😊
