Muscle Strength
Posted by Beepolen on January 23, 2009 at 2:01 amIm starting to get into invertions. Sometimes I feel strong and Im doing great. Other days it seem like I completly forgot everything and my muscles are weak. Is that normal? I do warm up and stretch. Any suggestions?

i think this happens to everyone- some days we are stronger than others- and i think this may be even more obvious while we are beginners and still developing basic muscle strength.
i find that if i work on the pole for a few days consecutively, i become weak- but when i take a couple days off, the next time i work out i’m even stronger than before and accomplish alot more!
The effects of your workouts on your muscles mostly take place on your days off- they need rest!
Other factors that may affect how strong or weak you feel may include:
1) mood and level of motivation 2) amount of sleep or quality of sleep 3) where you are in terms of your menstrual cycle 4) what type of nutrition you’ve consumed 5) what time of the day it is (some people may feel tired after a long work day, causing them to have less energy and thus be weaker)I’m sure there are more, this is all i could think of at the moment https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I have the same problem…and some days I just have ‘off’ days where I have terrible practices and I feel very weak those days also. I find it best when I do heavy poling one day and then take 1-2 days to recover depending on if I’m very sore or not and then do the heavy poling again. I’ve been using the inbetween days to work on easier spins and transition moves…pretty much anything where I don’t do a lot of weight bearing with my arms so they can recover. It’s best to let your muscles rest between workouts so they can repair themselves, if you get back into it too soon they don’t get stronger and we don’t want that! Yes it’s normal to have off days!! As much as a beginner who is in love with their pole hates to here it…the other ladies are right. Rest is the best thing. If you try and do heavy poling every day it will do more harm than good. When you do any type of exercise where you use your muscles to lift more than they are accustomed to…. you actually cause small tears in the muscle fibers. Don’t worry it’s normal…thats how your muscles grow…. kind of a tear and repair situation https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif So the real important part is the repair, if you don’t allow your muscle the time they need to recover or give them the nutrition they need you can end up with over use injuries and a worn out body. As a beginner you don’t want to have your heavy, hard work outs in a row. If you do inverts Monday then try transitions and dancing on Tuesday. You could also use the off days to stretch, just don’t forget to warm up first. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Im bringing this thread back because im having the same problem atm, and this thread has very useful info! Unfortunately it seems my weak periods last like 2 weeks, argh! I want to practice my darn butterfly not be too weak to do a fireman!!

Meleania i totally feel you! I had initially replied to this thread over a year and a half ago, and even now i still go through "bad phases". Sometimes it really is a loss of strength or technique (usually due to some time off or to light practices), but lately i’ve come to believe that many times it has to do with motivation. Sometimes i’m just not motivated enough to put in as much effort as a good practice session requires. It’s almost as if i feel like i should be able to execute moves more effortlessly after poling this long… and this leads me to actually try doing moves without effort, which in turn leads to a practice that just feels weak. This practice de-motivates me, leading to more "weak" practices.
Then one day i just snap out of it, and everything is fine again, & then i can’t understand why i was having such a hard time before. I don’t know if this makes much sense to anyone else.. Yea, I just did my first pole up the other day, I was super excited! I don’t think lack of motivation is whats causing me to not be able to do a basic fireman spin with 2 hands yesterday though. My muscles are just rebuilding and will be stronger once they have recovered! Cant wait! I had a complete pole-fail day yesterday as well. Sometimes it does just happen.
One thing I try to do is stop if I’m having one of those days. If you keep practicing and getting things subtly wrong, you’re teaching your body to do the wrong thing. Far better to leave it for another day and not have to try to undo bad habits. I know it’s hard, when you just want to force yourself to start succeeding, and I don’t always have the willpower to stop, but it is worth it.
As my tkd instructor keeps telling me – Practice does not make perfect. Practice makes permanent. Only perfect practice makes perfect.
