45 mm poles
Posted by Dancing Paws on April 29, 2011 at 1:35 pmSo I just got off the phone with x-pole. I was asking them when the 45 mm brass poles would be getting to the US, and they said mid-June (YAY!) I asked her about 45 mm and doing inverts, etc. She said it is better to do a 45 for anything with hand grips as your main support, and that 45 mm poles are now becoming the "standard." Apparently 50 mm are becoming "old." I thought that was interesting and that I'd pass the info on to my fellow pole girlies. I'm kinda excited. I can do fairly decent leg grasps on my 50 mm TG, and some spins, but I think a 45 mm brass pole would be so much better for me for some of the crazier moves (being a sweaty girl.)

I hope that this is not the case as I do not like 45's…but then again I have amazon hands!!

Thank you for posting!!!! I've fallen in love with 45mm. And brass? CANNOT WAIT! Just in time for my birthday!!!! 🙂

I think that the U.S. competition standard is still 50 mm, but all the other countries are using 45 mm for their competitions…at least that is what x-pole's website says.

That would be so great!
I competed in Battle of the pole in Sweden where they used a 50mm pole.
I know the european championship uses 50mm
World championship have a spinning 38mm and static 50mm pole.
The Icelandic championship had I think was a bit thinner then 38mm.
Do you know what other competitions are using? If we could get a good list it would give a pretty good idea of what is being used 🙂

I'm with chem, I don't care for 45's I have a gap in my thighs from riding horses for 30+ years and have a hard time gripping a 50 let alone anything smaller with my legs 🙁

Really? I have danced on a pole that was smaller then 38mm and had no problem gripping with my legs. But I dont ride horses either. Is there no way you could get used to it and adjust to the 45mm? Its not really a big difference I think. But then again I am used to 38mm.
I dont have small hands but I find hand grip really difficult on 50mm. Im really hoping to get used to it someday. I can however do anything on 38mm. Leg grips and armpit holds are just alot easier on 50mm but I dont think its worth it since I don't have any problems with those moves on a 38mm.
I say booo on 50mm. 😛 And a yay too because its just really comfy and super easy to do thigh holds on 50mm 😛

I'm kind of excited about x-pole brass coming to the US! I wonder if I should sell my pole and upgrade sometime down the road.

Ah! The more post I read up here…the more confuse with "my size"!! I'm 5'4 with small hands (6.5" from bottom palm to tip of middle finger – grabbing a 50mm i'll have a 0.5 inches gap)….Should I got for 45mm or 50mm?? I'm currently taking lessons in a studio and they only have 50mm brass there, but once I got my pole, I'm going to learn from home on SV.
There are no other studios around my area either so I can't try other sizes out…argh!!!!

eeh…i hate the fact that you can't go back and edit your post…
I had typos…what I meant was "the more confuse I am with my size"… =P

I have a 50mm at home and the studio I go to has 45mms. There are arguments for both, and if you can, use both. As for which to choose… It depends what you want. It’s easier to learn on a smaller pole, but some moves hurt more (shoulder mount, knee hold, etc.) It’s more challenging to learn on a 50mm, BUT 50mm steel is the standard in competition and 50’s will still hurt but in different ways (handsprings, split grip inverts)
Here is a link to an article from Rpole that made me wish I had a 38mm.

Thanks Cocoa!! I think I'll start w/ 50mm (learning on 50mm would make a switch to 45mm easier??)…and hopefully (eventually) I'll be able to buy a 45mm too…lol

I currently go to classes where we use 50mm x poles, I always really struggle to get a good grip with my hands for inverted moves which I find really disheartening. I was fortunate enough to go to another local(ish) studio to try 45mm poles which were amazing! I could do so much more than previously on the 50's but anything involving leg grips did hurt a lot more too. Im still to get my own pole (soon I hope!!!!!) and am definitely more drawn to the 45. then maybe once I am a much stronger poler and confident with the moves I will get a 50 also, just incase Im ever brave enough to try a competition.

45mm all the way!!! I got a 50mm static pole 5 years ago when I WANTED to start poling and NEVER used it after a few goes cos it felt so wide, fat, horrible and impossible. It literally just stood proud in our lounge for 5yrs and I never poled til September last year when I sold it and got a 45mm chrome xpole and the world of pole welcomed me! 🙂 And I don't have small hands either, I feel I have big hands compared to others! But yeah 45mm all the way for me 🙂
Oh and guess what I ordered 2 nights ago!!! A 45mm Brass xpole!!!! They are available in Aussie already. I AM SO EXCITED!!! I have serious slippery days with my 45mm Chrome so much so that sometimes I feel nervous in moves I am usually confident in incase I slip right off. The brass will solve this I hope and give me grip and allow me to do my moves even better and good timing cos I'm trying the TG handspring and working on my cartwheel mounts now.. maybe the brass will help me get them lol!

I am wanting to try a 45mm but I have really big hands https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif and was wondering if that would make it harder for me to grip. Is it that much of a difference from a 50?
