I think I’ve stumbled onto why so few men are addicted to pole: we have to be taught to love it.

As a man I’ve taken the co-ed tricks and choreo classes at my local studio for a year now. I’ve learned some cool tricks, I’ve discovered some unexpected weaknesses, got some great workouts, and made new friends, but always wondered about a rumored “addiction” was which converts middle-aged women into super-hot athletes.

Finally, this week, I was invited to join a ladies-only dance class with low lights. What a difference! Not just the extra-delicious movements of the instructor, but her constant encouragement to get into your body, to feel the subtle tugs all through the abdomen, to move expressively. The lights were low so you can learn how to enjoy the physical activity *instead of* the visual results. Teaching enjoyment more than skill. And it works…if pole always felt this good, I’d be hooked.

Very few forms of activity can make a body feel like this. I wish men knew it.

FoolsErrand, this is GREAT! It’s one of the reasons I will always love, promote and support the sensual side of pole, it’s somehow very fulfilling to our souls. I’m so happy you posted this!

Thanks for those responses…I guess I really am onto something.

But I just realized one other crucial component: it works because the instructor not only has the skill to make women accept and appreciate their bodies in a darkened studio, but to get a straight man to do the same thing, in the same room, at the same time, with all of us getting into it in the same way and none of us freaking out. I don’t know how she does it, but I’m grateful.

She sounds like a great instructor.

And, I love it when you post on here–it’s always great to hear your perspective.

Wow exactly why I love teaching my girls to feel every single movement. In addition to the low lights we encourage our girls to close their eyes and allow the music to move you instead of you moving to the music. We sometimes refer to our classes as “therapole”, fitness for your soul!

“Fulfilling the soul.” EXACTLY.Not alone either, but with people.

I love how well you describe why this is more than just dancing on a pole!!! People really don’t understand why it overtakes you the way it does and you hit it on the dot!!!

I feel that men and men like myself do not need to be taught to love pole, we just have to allow ourselves first the opportunity to do it and then do it again. The love for pole is instantaneous for both genders in my mind. I do have to agree, it is more than just dancing on a pole. It’s magic on the pole!

My opinion on why there are so few men public about their passions for pole is because A. Male Sensuality is not embraced as a whole b. marketing and c. class availability issues for men. It’s one thing if you live in an area without a pole studio but when you do and there aren’t any coed or male only classes, it just sucks. I found myself SOOOO ANNOYED not being able to pole on trips out of state due to the lack of coeds. Generally I seen that men want to embrace that sensual side of themselves, but they don’t want to be that guy who embraces it openly.

OMG yes! Classes are where everyone encourages you, so the lack of classes for men is a big deal; I’m so lucky to be at one of the few studios with coed “dance” classes. Given how those classes make me feel myself, I totally understand why newcomer women might get anxious about having a man in the room, but on the other hand maybe they wouldn’t worry as much if they knew that it makes us feel basically the same as they do: awesome.

I’m assuming you live in Redwood City, CA? May I ask which studio you have found? I’m familiar with couple studios in bay area and wondering if it’s one of them.

I go to Poletential; it has some amazing teachers, lots of really tall poles, an aerial studio, and best of all a ton of really fun people who are a pleasure to dance with and an inspiration to watch. And they have really good classes, with some really inspired men attending them (I’d be happy to praise them more specifically outside the forum). Love the place.

Hey Fools E. I flew down from Seattle to Poletential and was in your Anastasia Skukhtorova workshops a month back! Weren’t they the most difficult workshops ever?! Sheesh! Anyways, I was inspired by your dedication to the sport. I appreciate your thoughts mentioned above. 🙂
