Advice for a floor move please
Posted by Cherished on January 17, 2012 at 7:59 amDoes anyone know what strength moves or exercises I can do to be able to be strong enough to do what Mina does at 2:09 :
I would love to put that move in a routine but once I get flat on the ground then arch my back I can't get back up.

Quads 🙂 don’t go all the way down at first. As u get more comfy Go lower and lower, bringing it back up, till you can go all the way down. arch and lead with your hips!

I always practiced doing undulations down as that is what I did in my bellydance routines. You can start by just leaning back a ways then coming up and repeating, going further as you get strogner. Adding an undulation adds a challenge to the legs.

Oh, also, if you do get down to the floor flat on your back and get stuck, sweep your arms over head, arch your upperback a LITTLE, and prass your hands into the floor overhead while sweeping them down the sides of the body on the floor. This will help you get up a little easier if you can't do it on pure leg muscle., and it is still a pretty move that can go in a dance.

practice this at 0:50 (not quite as arched cuz she is freakishly bendy.) This just gives an idea of what I am talking about. She's doing basically the exact opposite of the girl in the video, but you can start out doing the move in small increments and move it further down as you progress.

I want to mention that you need a lot of quad flexibility for this. If you try it and don't have the flexibility, you can put a lot of pressure on your knees and really piss off your knees. I got over zealous as a student with this and ended up with angry knees. It got easier as my quads became more flexible.

Found another video for you (on accident). Good exercise. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9s-i2kJtOC0

Thank you Amy – I'm glad to have some direction on this finally. I love your blog by the way 🙂
Also thank you Sensualscimitar 🙂 I will try your tips. My quads seem to be flexible enough but the undulations will probably take me some time!

No idea if it will help you, but as I do this move I push my shoulder blades together which helps with both the lift and the arch. If i get tired it gets lop sided though, which is not so pretty. We call it the resurrection, for obvious reasons, hehe…

Thanks Madfelice. I will do this tip too. I was wondering if there was a name for that move – glad to know 🙂
