  • Aerial Hammock on Pull Up bar?

    Ok, So I was just browsing yoga hammocks and fly gyms and such…. I

    I’ve seen people hang them from pull up bars. As a matter of fact Fly Gym says “You can also hang your Fly Gym on pull up bars or monkey bars at the park!”

    I was just wondering… All these hammocks say they use carabiners that support 3,000+ pounds, which is great, but my pull up bar only supports 250lbs or something.

    I was just wondering if its really safe that way?

    Mine was hung from a pull up bar at first 🙂

    As long as you’re not over 250 lbs you should be fine 🙂 when the hammock is on the pull up bar you are somewhat limited in what you can do, but honesty as long as you can find a doorway/pull up bar with a good three feet of space on either side of the door, it’s not THATS limiting. Like I could still manage to invery and do inverted splits and stuff you just have to be a bit more strategic. But you’ll largely be doing aerial yoga work vs like aerial dancing. Still so worth it imo

    I just felt like there is all this emphasis on making sure the fabric and carabiners can hold 3,000 lbs and I’m not really sure why!

    I kind of thought I could just make a sling for my pull up bar with simple stuff from the hardware store but I guess its not that simple. Even the carabiners for 540LBS says you should not hang from it.

    I’m icing a shoulder injury and I just kind of wanted to be suspended and stretch. :/

    If you were doing drops or something with your yoga sling, I can see the need for the climbing caribeeners. Simply Stretching on it? Probably not necessary.

    I would not put a hammock on an Iron Gym type bar, just because it could fall down if you angled the wrong way!!! I could see using anything solid though for light yoga and stretching.

    When they state 250 lbs load for a pull up bar, it is relative to downward force applications. yoga slings do travel sideways/forwards/backwards and there is a whole different formula that is used in engineering to determine the weight load/break load. I am just replying from my phone…but when I get on the computer later… I will add some links for information from riggers/engineers in the aerial industry. I have seen some sketchy setups for aerial apparatus and seriously…. it is not worth the risk of pile driving on your head and sustaining serious cervical injury.
    I know people who have had a sling come down from being improperly hung. Scary business when you Are upside down.
