Aerial chopper/invert?
Posted by glitterhips on April 23, 2009 at 3:30 amIve been trying to be awesome like Veena and Fleur and get into either of these moves from up the pole but it just aint happening! I can tell my abs are definitely not strong enough to help flip me over but I wanted to see if anyone has any other tips for these moves or if I’m just stuck doing sit ups until the magical day where I can make it happen!

Continuing to work on you shoulder mounts can help. A good way to start building up strength of the air invert, and the SM, is to start inverting with out ANY momentum. Here are two of my favorite ways to practice this……oh, I think Roxy? is that mrstones new name..anyway I think she had a vid of herself inverting but with her legs in a V position from the START of the move. That is an excellent way to build abdominal strength. I would start with something a bit easier, like a roll invert. So the basic idea is… to try and roll yourself up into an invert. So feet out in front of the pole, bring your knees towards your chest, and lift yourself into an invert. Not jumping, kicking no momentum. This one is the easiest of the two, but by all means, they are NOT easy. So don’t get upset when they seem impossible.

hehehe…I’m flattered V! That was my split grip vid. Glitter this is a great way of learning how to invert/chopper up on the pole! My aerial invert/chopper has become much smoother since I started doing this! I started with the "roll up" and then progressed onto the "V"…which I can honestly say is still pretty hard! I watched my vid and it looks like it was a heck of a lot easier than what it felt like!

Would you mind linking me to the video? I dont remember which one it was https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

I have another sorta-kinda related question: would doing like a reverse shoulder mount (I guess you could call it a shoulder dismount, haha) be another good way of working ab strength??? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif Like invert normally and then get in the shoulder position and slowly transfer your weight to the shoulder and arms and then really slowly lower your legs… is that possible, or would it be funky to get into??? I’m a long way from a SM (from the floor let alone aerial!) but I was trying to think of some nice ways to try to work more ab strength in the meantime. I’ve been wanting to try it but I always get on the pole and get disoriented and I’m like "Ok my body needs to go this way… ah crap I meant the other way! Oh look, it’s the floor!!!!" https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif
Sorry to crash your thread, Glitter, but I didn’t want to start another similar thread and maybe it’s an idea for you to try, too. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_sunny.gif

I do the shouldermount dismount too for core strength…but I don’t know if I would be doing them before being able to do a shouldermount! Someone correct me if I’m wrong…but usually the sm dismount is taught after the sm is learned. I found that doing the sm first allowed me to understand where my body was so then when I started doing the sm dsmt I already had the body memory down. Have you already been able to do a sm dismount? I was totally freaked out by the dismount the first time I tried it…and I had been doing sm for a few mths already…more power to ya! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

No I can’t do either one, lol https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif But I would like to and I would like to think that there wouldn’t be too much danger as long as you did it close to the floor… but I’m not sure, that’s why I asked! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
I’m tempted to give it a shot… Pepper is giving me that "try it!" look again…

Ok now I really feel like a dummy..whats the SM dismount look like? I know im not doing it because my dismount in my shoulder mount video sounds like an elephant falling to the ground! Actually thats what all my dismounts sound like. erm, anyway… https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif

I don’t think sit ups really help in this situation, Glitterhips. I think the focus is on the lower abs for aerial inversion. Which all goes back to learning to invert properly, using abdominal strength instead of momentum. I started doing shoulder mount prep exercises and discovered that my lower abs are made of chocolate chip cookies (vegan cookies, but still cookies nevertheless!). Keep at it, girl.

Haha yoga – my boyfriend has a theory that anything "vegan" or "organic" is good for you so you can eat as much as you want…im not going to test that theory because if i do i wont fit into my pole shorts anymore https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif

Yeah so I tried doing the shoulder dismount and I can’t seem to get the very top of my shoulder on the pole – my collarbone is what’s against the pole and it hurts like |-|311!!! I’m trying to curl my back a bit so the top of my shoulder is against the pole instead, but I can’t seem to quite get it… this is kinda worrying me because if I do a regular SM, won’t my collarbone hit the pole when I wrap my legs around it??? I’m hoping maybe I’m doing it wrong…
Cookies??? Where!?!? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Too trueHaha yoga – my boyfriend has a theory that anything "vegan" or "organic" is good for you so you can eat as much as you want…im not going to test that theory because if i do i wont fit into my pole shorts anymore https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif
too true. vegan cupcakes may be cholesterol free, but that doesn’t automatically make them healthy!
The slow dismount for abs is what Jamilla has been teaching. She also suggests doing it with your shoulders on the floor. It builds up strength in the abs and inverts become strength rather than momentum based.Hurts like crazy, I’ve done the floor based work intermittently, but it does make a difference when inverting, or kicking the pole with leg above head…

maybe it’s just me, but i think that the shoulder mount dismount is waaayy harder than the actual shoulder mount.. i tried it once, had no control whatsoever, and just flopped down- so i don’t think that helped my abs any- so really there’s no point doing it for me yet.. plus i got kinda scared, it seems a bit dangerous not being able to control it! I find it better to practice this right after doing a SM, just coming right back down before actually completing the invert- still hard though! i could be wrong, but i’d say it might be better to learn the SM first. :0 Let me know if you figure anything else out about this!xx
