I'm look to purchase alethea austin's stretching & pure splits dvds. I was wondering if anyone knew how many times per week you are supposed to do one of the stretching dvds. I just want to know how often you should do them, because I am also joining the gym so I can get in some cardio. I have a pole in my apartment, and I do pilates at home as well. I just don't want to be in a position where I have to stretch every day, and push my workout time close to 3 hours. My usual workout routine is a dance warm-up, some pilates and yoga strengthening moves, pole dancework, strength holds, and then spins/tricks. Ideally I would like to alternate by finishing the workout with either cardio at the gym or stretching (alternate every day), but this obviously won't work if I need to do her stretches every day. Any help/tips with this?

There is some input in this thread:

Basically, you can do gentle stretcing every day, but you need to give a few days in between flexibility training days for your muscles to recover.

I think in the DVD she says to do them once or twice a week?  I can't remember, but she does not recommend doing them everyday.  Also, as sensualscimitar said, doing deep/intense stretches everyday is usually adivised against, so you are off the hook!

In the DVD she says to stretch 5 times a week to gain flexibility and 3 times a week to maintain. I think it all comes down to your own body, and what your goals are. If gaining a lot of flexibility is a priority for you, then you will have to put in a considerable amount of time and effort. If maintaining what you already have is fine, or if you want to just get into stretching because you like doing it, but have no specific stretching goals, then spending less time per day or week would be ok. Its always good to slowly work your way into any fitness regimen, but again, it depends on your body 🙂

In her video she says to stretch 5x per week to increas flexibility, 3x times to maintain–I believe. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like a lot of things to pack in all at once. You could probably sub yoga and pilates on your resting days, and do the Alethea stretches 3 days to start. I had trouble with rushing my workouts and not being warmed up enough for stretching. I pulled a hamstring muscle all the way back to my bum. It’s taken a while to heal but I have been able to bounce it off some others and have been given some great advice. What are your goals with pole? I don’t do card or any other means of fitness than anything that involves my pole. I do hoop a little but it is really just for fun. I know others here who do cardio as well as other stuff to workout. So it is different for everyone. Do what makes you happy and listen to your body. 🙂
