Amatuer Competition
Posted by Fallen Angel on April 5, 2011 at 12:53 amHi everyone,
I've recently decided to enter an amatuer competition, I need a song, something fresh and funky.. but not too fast 🙂
Any suggestions? I think it has to be a minimum of 4 minutes.
P.S I'm crapping myself already lol

Oh pity about the 4 minutes, My Superman by Santogold is brilliant! If you like it enough, maybe download Audacity (free song editing software) and see if you can loop the middle or something?

I had never heard that song before so I just googled it and it’s definately going on the list 🙂
any other ones, you might suggest? I’ve been told to pick something you know well and like as it will show when your dancing.. I’m into hip hop, rnb, reggaetonnsort of stuff and I also love rock. Anything in that category on your list? 🙂 🙂 -
Funny, I had the exact OPPOSITE problem, Fallen Angel! I just got accepted into an amateur competition but the song had to be NO LONGER than four minutes… of course I discovered audacity and chopped up a few bits so it works =)
GOOD LUCK!!!

Just found out it should be between 2 & 3 minutes.. PHEW!! I thought i'd die going over 4 LOL

That's so exciting! I don't have any great song ideas, just wanted to wish you luck! Entering an amateur competition is a future pole goal of my own too. 🙂

I would be more than honored to help you!
The biggest thing i recommend is think about floor work moves the same way you would think about pole tricks. How can I smoothly get from this trick/floor to the next. If you start to think of your floor moves as skilled tricks it is easier to not think of it as dancing (which can be intimidating) and instead it will feel like a combo.
Get yourself in a room without a pole. Put on some music, work that floor for a song, don't stop even if it feels awkward or doesn't quite feel the way you want it to. Give yourself a few minutes than try it again. Try different ways of standing up and getting down.
A good game to get you ready to practice floor is take two floor moves you would like to use, write them down, and then try to connect them several different ways in your head. Write each of those ways even if you are unsure that they will work. Anything you don't have a name for just describe. Sometimes our brains go blank when we are practicing and do not know who stole all of our good ideas 🙂 . If an idea strikes and there is nothing to write it with, I will text myself the idea. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_geek.gif
Example: Two moves i want to connect -1st move- Bicycle -2nd move- Shoulder stand Combos: 1) Bicycles-> Bicycles legs open-> Backroll->lay flat-> Shoulder stand 2)Bicycle->sit up sexy->gently roll to knees -> slide forward down to floor-> Floor bodywave->shoulder stand to split.
Make at least 4-5 different combos for each two moves you pick even if there is only one transition connecting them. Then try them all out a few times to see which you like best and those that still need work.
If you have veena's lessons, she has a lot of floor work in her beginner lessons, the elbow lift in intermediate, and the shoulder stand and roll in the advanced. Plus in her beginner section there are a lot of transitional things that are really useful on the floor like body waves. There is no way in posts i could convey all the wonderful things there.
Video yourself, watch, rewatch. The more you watch it the more you will see what looks great and what needs to be fine tuned. Plus then you can upload a video and all of us can give you specific feedback, ideas, and help! It can be scary to upload your first video, but this is a great supportive place and everyone here wants you to do well. Let us know whatever you need!

Thanks heaps, I'm just at work now, so i'll sneek a peek at these a bit later on 🙂 I think i'll put the song on when I get home tonight and try what you said, maybe just dance around to the music to get a start and go from there.
I love how you text yourself ideas!! That's brilliant!!
Sooo excited now!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I haven't checked out all the links offered but I was wondering if anyone had advice on floorwork and general style for a song that is very raw, pulsating, with lots of hard base and drum beats…. It seems like most dances are to songs that are more fluid and smooth, so I was wondering if you had any tricks to going with something like this or any videos for inspiration?
