If you haven’t yet, read Born to Run. Super motivational. Also, for shoes, I highly recommend Mizuno minimalist shoes. It’s good to condition your feet to running almost barefoot. It works more foot and leg muscles for sure!

I did C25K, and loved it– took me longer than it "should", but who cares… 2 years later I'm running marathons. Love running more than I ever thought I would!

As for shoes, I agree it's very personal, but I love Asics Gel-Kayano. Expensive though, but nothing else seems to work so well for me, especially with heavy mileage.

I'm an involuntary runner. I run because the Army says I have to https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif. My form is good but I can't breathe to save my life. I've tried the in-in-out on the third foot strike; in through the nose, out the through the mouth approach, and the running to a beat, but I can't breathe when I run. I feel like when I'm breathing in, I'm not getting enough air and I can't expand my lungs enough to fill them. It's a horrible feeling. I don't mind running, but I can't get my runtime down as a result. I distance run 3x a week (3 miles at a steady pace) and do sprints for 2miles 2x a week. I switch days the following week. Any suggestions?

I'm going to second SharkyHill and say go with the less is more approach. You don't want thick, clunky running shoes, no matter what the adverts say.

I am totally addicted to running–it keeps me sane. Actually the one thing I've really craved during this pregnancy is running. Thank goodness I'm finally well enough (got a mile run in on Tuesday for the first time in 2 months) or I would be ready to be committed. 😀

@Phinixx I had the same problem with breathing. The in thru the nose and out thru the mouth finally worked for me. I was told to chew gum while I was running…not sure why that helped, but it did!

@Cheerybomb, Thanks for the links. Can  you use your own music with the podcast? Great info about vibrams. I wonder if that would be better for me with my crappy knee?

@koidragon-I love that website!! I guess I’m technically “blerching” right now since I’m messing around on this forum when I should be working! Whoops!

Ohhh me, me! I’m a runner with six full marathons down and another coming in October. Never in a million years thought I would like it, but I also never thought I would work out in 6 inch heels either…

So I've recently took up running and found that I'm quite a good runner… I have good form and I midfoot strike. I also have crazy stamina for someone who hasn't really taken up running since 1997, or done very much cardio. I walked/jogged 10k just the other day and at the end of my run, I noticed that my ankle is a bit sore.  I read on the internet that it's normal to feel a bit sore around the ankle area as new runners are not used to the new physical activity and it's just overworked areas on my legs. I also bought new runners just today and went on another run today (not 10k…). My ankle area is still a bit sore and is kind of bothersome when I walk. I was wondering whether or not I should get an ankle brace to help have some support for them while I continue to run. Would this be a good idea? Would it help?

From what uhave been reading, u need to train months before going and doing a 10 k without injury. Even though u were able to do it, your muscles and joints aren’t ready for that long time of a pounding. I would say slow down, do a few miles at a time, let that ankle heal, and work up to a 10 k. Oh, and be sure to rest every other day. I have heard of many runners who go all out at first, injure their body and have to stop. Just like we tell polers, don’t kick into an invert, learn and train for it properly to avoid injury. I am glad your enjoying running, I am missing it! Keep it up, but don’t over do! 🙂

I wouldn't say it's normal to be sore like that, more like you did more than your joints were up for at this point. Energy level aside, you really need to build up mileage gradually, with proper rest, in order to get your joints, etc used to the pounding so you don't injure yourself and end up unable to run at all! There are many great training plans online (Hal Higdon's are good, for example) or Couch to 5K that will help you start small and build up without pain or injury. It's not worth the risk trying to do too much too fast… just because you're in good shape doesn't mean your body is up for anything.  ðŸ™‚

Also, make sure you've got good running shoes, and remember the cushioning in them is only good for about 300-400 miles on average. I know I need new shoes when I start feeling my runs in my knees (usually I'm pain free).
