Anyone do pole AND silks?
Posted by velvetvixen on September 12, 2010 at 7:30 pmI was wondering if anyone does both pole and silks. I know some of the moves are similar in form, but they may have different names. Is there a nice list somewhere comparing the two or would you be willing to look at moves I am talking about? Thanks so much!

i dont think that silks is anywhere near as standardized as pole… the moves are all pretty standard but the drops i see with different names all over the place. but i’d be willing to look at whatever you want to send/post!

I take both…there are a lot of moves that are the same or similar…I have heard different names at different studios for the silks as well as pole…here is a link that is kinda cool… I bought a beginners manual for aerial silks and one for aerial yoga from them… also if you want to email/pm me some photos let me know

amyxshi and verucablue -Thanks for your help! I will have to keep you both in mind if I have further questions. Do you take classes or have silks in your house?
For now, I’ll just post up the few I have in question.arielsilk.jpeg

hmmm ok i dont think that these have "standard names" that i know of– i would just give them descriptive names–
the first one- double footlock (looks like the aerial reverse footlock?) split
the others in the picture– purple silk, black outfit: same side knee hook but looks like she may have the other foot in a footlock
white silk- knee hook (can’t tell which side) with body wrap- looks like the step right before a star drop but tough to tell with the resolution of the pic -
The 1st is a double foot lock split (or at least that’s how I know it)
The second in purple looks like a crucifix knee hook (or at least that’s how I know it)
and the 3rd – that looks like the CKR in pole…can’t remember the name for it probably because I hate doing it in pole…and avoid it in silks LOL -
I don’t do silks, but I do aerial yoga. I use a yoga swing which is made of the same chiffon material as silks. =)

Off subject, but do you fellow silkers know a good place to get cool leggings for silks? I can’t find anything tight anywhere!

1. My studio calls the first pic move a double foot lock split
2. My studio calls the first move a "fishhook." It’s a single footlock then place the fabric diagonally behind the hip and lean back and hook the free leg. For the 2nd pic, it’s hard for me to see how she is wrapped exactly, but it looks like a transitional move where she is almost ready to go into a drop known as the "single star" or something similar, but I can’t really tell from the pic. Those books that Veruca mentioned are excellent! My friend has them and made me a copy of the intermediate one, and I love the pics and descriptions.
As far as leggings are concerned… I found some really interesting ones on Ebay, but I would recommend getting a unitard of sorts so that if your shirt comes up during a drop, you won’t get fabric burn on your torso (trust me… it hurts!!) You can gfind those at American Apparel or most online dance sites.

Hey Veruca! Glad to hear you are going back, did you learn a lot from them? I would love to see some pics! I really enjoyed my classes with them. I will definitely be taking more next time I come out there. I didn’t get to check Cirque School out. I wish I could have stayed another week or so, there are so many different classes and schools in the LA area to explore! There was one I wanted to go to called Kinetic Theory that Mina had mentioned. Apparently they have really good contortion stretching classes. Do you know anything about that school?

Next time I am there I will have my friend take some pics LOL we meant to last time but there were only 2 of us in class and by the time we remembered our camera neither of us could barely lift our arms LOL https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
I really like it there – the teachers are very helpful and extremely patient – which is a plus. They break down each move well. I have not been to Kinetic but have heard good things about it…I DID however go to Hollywood Aerial Arts a while back and honestly it is amazing that I ever tried tissu again………..it was a truly YUCKY experience https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_puke_r.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_puke_l.gif …i.e. if I ALREADY knew what I was doing I would not be taking a beginners class so I really don’t need you to YELL at me WTF- really annoying, rude, evil, male instructor – such a turn off

amyxshi and verucablue-Thanks so much! I apologize for the delay. I haven’t been getting forum post emails from SV b/c somehow it ended up in junk. It does this ever so often. I finally found a circus school (somewhat near me) that does ariel work so I am going to check it out!
