  • Apparently I’m not a beginner! First pole class in 9 months

So after an initial 3 months of weekly pole classes, the last 9 months I have been learning pole at home with help from you guys and Veena.
It’s nearly my 1 year pole anniversary.

As my progression has slowed I thought I would give classes another go. I figure I need an instructor to help me hands on with technique and kick my ass with strength training and confidence.
I decide on a new pole studio and trot along to my beginners class. There were 4 other students and 3 poles so plenty of time to practice those spins.
To my astonishment not only am I loads stronger than any of the other girls (plus 20 years older), they are soon watching my practice saying “oooh, how graceful, how do you do it like that?”

The instructor decides to teach some pole sits and I get a round of applause as I shimmy up the pole and execute a Peter Pan. Then as the other girls practice their spins the instructor gives me my own pole to practice inversions. Again the ooohs and aaahs as I get into inverted crucifix, gemini and cross knee release. It was a bit weird.
Why on earth did I think I am still a beginner?
The instructor said I was strong, have good form and should consider the intermediate class. I nearly got my Scorpio too which I am scared of at home. She said I can do it, it is just confidence.

Anyway I just wanted to share for those new polers who struggle with basic spins. That was me too. I couldn’t even do a fireman spin properly at the start and now I have new polers clapping me. “You maybe the oldest but you’re the best here”, said one of the girls. Great boost as I approach my 45th birthday…will get my splits soon too.

    Happy poling.x

Great story. I’m 48 and poling 18 months. In my head I am still a late beginner/early intermediate but the moves I can bust say otherwise – one armed spins, holly drop combos, thunderwoman, extended butterfly, beginner handsprings.
It’s confidence and self belief, isn’t it?

Pole does not discriminate. You can be any age, any shape, any level, heels or no heels, and the great pole deity accepts and loves us all. Lol. Too embarrassed to give my age, just a happy pole queen, never poled until faced with the burden of powering through a horrible divorce.

49 here and been back poling since April. Joined a studio about a month ago and was so thrilled to have the same experience! The instructor keeps saying “and you, you are strong so I want you to do it this hard way”. I did competitive figure skating and the other girls would just as soon put razor blades in your skates, never mind clap and be supportive and offer to take a video. Not sure if the forum here and the studio are representative of the pole community but I hope so. I just love seeing women of all shapes, sizes and ages kicking ass with no apologies.
