  • Arching my back during cartwheel mount to straight edge

I have finally conquered my nemesis the cartwheel…however now I can’t straighten my back out after I get into my straight edge! I was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 13 so I’m wondering if that has any affect on my posture for this move? Amber told me pretend like I’m walking on the ceiling to straighten myself out, so I do, but then I go back and look at the video and my back is still arched and no matter what I try I can’t really straighten it out. My straight edge looks super ugly because of my back and I hate it https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif Is there anything else I can try or is it possible my scoliosis is making me unable to straighten it out all the way?

Glitter, does your SG straight edge look any straighter when you do it from an invert as opposed to from a cartwheel mount? Because if it does it might be just positioning of the hands (distance between them) and/or body positioning. If it’s the same, I’m not sure…

Vamp has in interesting point…can you straight edge from other grips and does it look better?

I’m guessing you already are doing this but ab engagement is important for supporting the back and keeping good posture. Did you post this video? (going to look now to see if you did)

I just saw your picture in larger view and you have quite a curve though I would not call it "ugly"!

It could quite possibly be due to your scoliosis depending on how severe it and what direction your spine is curved – MOST are lateral/sideways curves but some are backwards curves.

Have you ever been told to be careful of your back – I would wonder if you are not suppose to do something like this depending on how severe the scoliosis is and how weak your back may be.

Another thought…can you do a headstand or handstand against the wall? Can you straighten your back out doing either of those?

Finally, until you figure out how to straighten you back, if you can, work on your leg placement: together or together and one bent may improve the appearance of your straight edge.

OK here’s a photo of a straight edge with a different grip from an invert, it seems like I’m kinda arching my back here too…I do tell myself to contract my abs and I feel like I’m doing it, but then I go back and watch video/see photos and it doesn’t look like I’m doing anything differently than I was before, bleh!

Empy…when I was diagnosed they said it wasn’t too severe of a curve and they didn’t tell me to limit my physical activities although that was over 10 years ago so I should probably get rechecked, however I don’t feel like it interferes with any other activities that I know of, I walk fairly straight/have good posture. My mom has it too though and hers was severe enough where she had to have a rod attached to her spine. I don’t know if it’s something that can worsen over time or not, my doctor has never brought it up as a concern but I’m due for a physical anyway. It doesn’t feel uncomfortable when I do any moves like straight edge etc. but I feel like I am really straight and then I go back and look and I’m not. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

That straight edge looks i better alignment and even with a slight arch it’s probably due to the balance needed for the elbow hold since your chest is close to the pole.

Still it COULD be the scoliosis. Scoliosis means the muscles are weak so it may be difficult for you to hold a straighter line in certain positions….and the cartwheel mount faces you more away from the pole rather than right at it in addition to the different grip position.

I tend to believe it just needs more work…practice and getting use to the balance cause you look pretty secure with the elbow hold so you probably just need to get use to the other angle. You not only need to engage your abs but put yourself more in neutral spin which can be confusing when you’re upside down. Imagine pulling your belly button back toward your spine that may help.
