Aysha…split grip vs. forearm grip vs. elbow grip

Thats the point I am at now stardust, forearm and elbow grip work every time for me now so I'm trying split grip aysha. Terrible at it right now, I come straight down when my legs get off the pole! I shall practise 🙂

@Shellectra: You will get it with practice! Your progress shown in your pics has been amazing! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

I have only ever used the elbow grip – forearm grip is probably easier but far less comfortable for me. The elbow grip is nice and solid -straight edge, v and jackknife are fine. We are 50/50 in my class elbow and forearm – funny how everyone's anatomy is different and one is more confortable/easier. The split grip aysha eludes me – might check out Cinaras twisted grip…!

Pole twin, just be careful with the twisted grip: warm up, go into it from an invert and watch out for owwies. I know you will be but it is hard on the joints at first I don't want to be responsible for anyone getting hurt. Still, it's a handy grip to have for transitions.

@Cinara – I will have a look at your pic, because I can't do anything else from the twisted grip – not that I ahve tried – my instructor left for Australia (permanently) on the weekend https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif so maybe I should wait till my new instructor comes…my forearms tend to 'harden' up quite a bit – although regular massage has made them better – but I don't want an injury so will be careful….Thanks for caring!
@shellectra – The jacknife from the elbow grip is the only way I know how to do it yet. I suppose from the split grip it's the same, but its just a matter of sending your hips in the opposite direction from where you send your legs just so you keep your balance…Fun!

You know what’s funny? This whole time I’ve been doing all 3 grips with 4 fingers together. Not a single instructor told me about GUN GRIP. Lol.
So today i try gun grip and I feel much more sturdier with elbow and split. Thank you, Veena and her lessons!

I’m totally showing this thread to my instructor tonight. she struggles with aysha elbow grip, but her forearm grip is good. I told her screw the elbow grip, forearm looks just as pretty and doesn’t cause her any shoulder pain.

a lot of people who start comfortable with forearm grip, and then try to learn elbow, find it uncomfortable– because they are arching and sticking their butt out just like with a tpical forearm grip– and not engaging their core and rounding their back as is necessary for an elbow grip.

For me, elbow grip has been the revelation. after I figured how to caterpillar sideways off the pole I got my elbow grip aysha 🙂 My elbow feels secure, I get a good push-n-pull that holds me in place, and my weight goes through my bones. If I have a problem it's my lower hand slipping.
Split grip aysha I haven't mastered yet. I can do butterfly and extended butterfly and just started tucking the legs and slowly loosening them but haven't found the sweet spot for balance yet. Will try the looking up next time (I tend to look at my bottom hand).
Forearm grip is supposed to be the easiest because it has the most contact with the pole, but I've given up on it for now. I first tried when learning caterpillar, but it's just not working for me.
I'm suspecting inflexible wrists are part of the problem: I can't wrap my arm around the pole enough, to be able to get the hand on it kinda rolls out of my inside elbow. Result is trajectory straight to face plant… Even basic forearm grip butterfly is a pain, I can barely do it, but split grip is fine here.
And then my boobs are in the way 🙁 I swear, big boobs are an obstacle for this grip https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif . Hugging the pole in it gets stuck on my top boob which results in pole burn (coming out of a caterpillar position), bruising and more OWWWWWW than I'm willing to endure – especially after I found that elbow grip gets around all those problems and just feels secure 🙂
So I think elbow grip will be the key to caterpillar climb and straight edge, I just need a taller pole – I'm petrified I'd break my toes hitting the ceiling, LOL!!! To bad I'm tall and my ceiling is low…

It's so weird that when I caterpiller up high and position my top arm in elbow grip, it feels gummy and unstable until I quickly take legs off and let my body be as far from the pole as possible, then suddenly it goes from gummy useless elbow grip to the main support of my straight edge!! Sorry bad explaination but I am always eager to get away and get my legs off cos then my core takes hold and I am can stay up for a good amount of time haha

I really need to start getting on here more often. This is a great thread. Answering many of my own questions, and particularly I’m grateful for the tips for tall chicks. I’m 5’11, 125 lb. and I’ve struggled a lot to get so many tricks that come easy to others. I’ve just never gotten such helpful instruction for my body type like what is here. I guess there’s hope!! 🙂

I love hearing about everyones experience with this…
What I've decided is that I'm just odd because I like split grip. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif That's okay, I've always been a little odd. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_safesex.gif I'm also going to try the elbow grip soon I think because so many people do prefer that to both forearm and split. Maybe I'll just scratch the forearm grip for now…I would assume that any move you can do in it you can do with either elbow or split anyway, if not, someone please correct me.
So for now I'm going to keep working on split grip and since "mostly" everyone else finds it more difficult, I can be a little show off. hehe https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

I love split grip too! In terms of enjoying the arm position, I just wish it liked me when both legs are airborne, LOL. Forearm grip I was determined to move away from and into Elbow Grip because I found it boring lol… Elbow grip looks more adventurous lol

I'm an elbow gripper. Forearm grip feels awkward, and I've always found myself gravitating towards elbow grip from the minute I attempted my first aysha. It's gotten a lot better since then lol. Split grip is evading me, my balance is horrid trying to straddle out in a split grip from the pole (yet I can cartwheel mount into one).
Working on the extended aysha with the elbow grip currently 🙂
