Backorder!!!
I ordered my very first pole (a 50mm TG Xpert) a week ago, and I got an email that they're on backorder!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif They're holding a 45mm for me if I want it, but… I don't know if I do. I'm a total newbie, have had 12 1-hour lessons at the local studio, and a lot of the feedback I got before I ordered was that it's better to learn on a 50mm. (Karol Helms (!!) even responded to me on Facebook (!!!!) when I asked her this question & said the same thing.)
So I don't know if I want to go ahead and get the 45 and have it now, or wait until the 50s come back in stock the first of April. I'm just so disappointed right now. It almost feels like heartbreak…
I'm sorry to come cry here on the forum, but I just felt the need to express myself to all you wonderful ladies (and guys!) who I know will understand. Thanks for listening (reading?).

Hi MissKitty, I understand your disappointment.
It's a matter of personal preferences, but would personally go for the 45mm. I have a 50mm pole, but my hands are quite small so I would definitely prefer a smaller diameter to play with. This site, even, has 45mm as their "default" selection.

Hi MissKitty! I too own a 50, but am planning on ordering a 45mm soon. I have had my 50 for about a year, mostly pole at home. I know personally I am SO much stronger on the 45mm…the leg grip will take some getting used to for me. Will you be taking classes in a studio with 50mm poles or will you mostly be on your "home" pole? I have a studio not too far away that has all 45's there. Maybe you should see if there is somewhere you could try out a 45 and see if it "feels" right? Good luck!

I have a 50mm pole, and am planning on ordering a 45mm one as well to have a variation. 45mm is better for smaller hands to grip, but 50mm is a more standard pole.
I've used someone elses' 45mm pole and didn't notice TOO much of a difference except that my fingers went further around it. My hands fit a 50mm pretty well also though (long fingers!)

Hey there. I just wanted to say, my first pole was a 50mm, and I really liked it. I was awesome for learning on for leg and hangs and everything, but now that I have my 45mm, I wouldn't trade it for anything. Handsprings and pretty much any move instantly became easier for me and I have pretty decent sized hands. I can just grip the pole so much sturdier now…

I got the 50mm pole because I had read its the competition standard but now I'm starting to think I should have gone with the 45mm.

i have 2 45 tgs and love em. my studio had only 45s. i tried a 50 at a different studio and it was too big for my hands. but doable. i actually bought my replacement 2nd one this week from xpole and have received it already!! )(had a chrome ps) i think you'll build strength a lot quicker w the 45 and if your studio uses 45s, you will have no problem practicing at home. in my experience you lose confidence at home so why make it harder on yourself? in the end, you are ahead of the game to even have one at home! but let us know what you wind up choosing. 🙂

@PoleKitten – I don't have any problems with the 50s at GDS. Before I ordered my xpole I asked Ashley about the difference. She says my hands are normal size. The're 6 1/2 inches from the base of the palm to the tip of my longest finger, and I too have long fingers (gloves don't ever fit right). I've heard there's a Pixie pole (45mm) at GDS in Mt P, I'm thinking about calling them to see if I can play on it for a little bit.
@FuzzyNavel – I'm planning on still taking lessons at the studio in addition to my home practice, so I will still have access to the 50mm poles once a week. Is that enough? I've been told it's harder to transition up in size and easier to transition down (excepting the leg holds).

I love both although my heart will always always be with my 45. I make sure I can do everything on both poles but I do find the 45 easier for my cartwheels, elbow grips, etc because I have small hands. Have you used a 45 before? Maybe you can find somewhere or someone who has a 45 so you can have a quick play, try everything you can do, spins, CKR, inverts and see which you prefer. A lot of my students prefer the 50mm, particularly for the CKR but everyone is different.

I am a rank novice. I cannot invert (nor would I dare try yet!!) and don't even know what a CKR is. My tricks are limited to a Dip & Spin, pirouettes, Floor work, Switch-foot, Russian Kick, Anastasia kick, Liberty Kick, Pole sit, pole climb, Lunge spin, Hook -and-Arch, Hip spin, Cupid hold, a newly-aquired Elbow Stand against the pole, and probably a couple other basic things I've left out. I almost always have one foot on the floor.
There's a sister studio to the one I attend that has a 45 (which they refer to as a Pixie pole). I'm going to call them and see if I can go play on it for a few minutes between classes one day this coming week.

A Cross Knee Release (CKR) is one of the next steps from sitting on the pole. So as you can sit, try the sitting on both sizes, for my students that is the test. If they can sit on a 45 (and can spin, etc on a 45 too) then that may be the pole for them.
I think it is a good idea to ask the other studio, even if you have to pay a drop in fee, it will be worth it to be completely happy with your pole.

MY POLE CAME IN TODAY!!!
Just wanted to let you know. It is a shining golden beauty, and stands proudly in my living room/entry way. I did a few tricks right after erecting it, and tried spinny mode for the first time ever just to see what it's like. 6 weeks on backorder felt like forever, but I want to let everyone know that Sissy with House of Pole is a glorious woman with customer service skills that are beyond description. She even sent me her cell phone number after emailing me about the backorder so I could talk with her directly instead of sending emails back and forth.
