Ballet
Posted by LondonCalling on June 7, 2009 at 12:22 amAfter seeing a few vids and hearing from a few people in chat about how they wish they had prior dance experience, I thought maybe I’d make a few vids for introductory ballet that will allow you to use the chair and the pole as a barre and to provide tips for position, posture, and execution of basic ballet techniques. I was taught and certified in the Cecchetti method of ballet and I have 17+ years of experience (I’m 21 though) https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif . I’m looking to get just a little more feedback before I start so I have an idea of what you’re interested in learning and things that I should include as far as maybe creating pdfs with terminology or finding websites so you can further your knowledge of ballet on your own. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I look forward to getting feedback from you guys so leave a reply if you’re interested so I can start A.S.A.P https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

That’s a very nice offer! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif This is going to sound contradictory, but I have no personal interest in ballet really, but I love the idea of expanding knowledge of dance styles to enhance pole dancing. If you did it, I would probably check it out anyway… lol. I have a great admiration for ballet but I don’t think I could do it myself, that’s all. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif
However, I will add that more "universal" things that ballet has like stretches, positions, posture, etc. are things I would definitely like to see because it can be easily applied to pole. The moves aren’t what would thrill me. Like I said, no offense, I’m definitely cheering you on because I think it’s a great idea! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Jay that’s so nice of you & such a great idea!! i’d love to see anything on this, although i agree with foxy in that i don’t know how much i could benefit from seeing tons of ballet moves- but posture, alignment, arm movement & beginner stuff, and anything that helps with grace would be awesome! i’m excited!!!

I hope it didn’t come off as disrespectful to anyone, esp Veena. I’m not trying to plug a personal business, just offering to share a bit of knowledge at no cost. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif

I don’t think you came off as disrespectful. Isn’t that what message boards are for? For sharing knowledge, information and opinions.. I’ll take whatever I can get jay. Post away! LOL
I want info on stretching and posture. Foot placement fo turns and …turns! How do I good turns. My Pirouettes are struggling!

Thats such a cool idea!
I don’t know much about ballet, but I have seen that there are lots of jumps and pirouttes – maybe you could figure out how to use the pole to do some basic leap type things, you could create some new pole moves https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
But yeah, posture, stretching ideas, how to keep from getting dizzy when u spin… https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif anything would be cool!
Thanks!!

A few of the major benefits I’ve gotten from ballet are strong leg muscles, improved core strength, added grace and improved posture. One of the most basic things I was taught is that before you even begin to choreograph, listen to the music, fantasize and find ways to fill it so that every second is spent dancing and there is no stand-still. And something I look forward to sharing is how to better control your movements so that it can all look as effortlessly executed like how Veena does it https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_geek.gif -
When I have an older patient at work that I don’t want to scare into a heart attack ask me what kind of dance I do, I alway tell them Vertical Barre Ballet.
This thread totally made me think of that.
I think you had a wonderful idea, BTW.

I’d love to see ballet videos. I actually just ordered a ‘centerwork’ ballet dvd off of netflix for my next movie b/c I thought it’d help with pirouettes and such. Arm/hand posture & movement would be great to see too.

omg, i love this idea! i’ve actually thought that a ballet/pole dance would look beautiful! (if done correctly https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cyclops_ani.gif) Ballet would be really helpful with pole moves too. It helps you become more aware of your body placement and posture! I say go for it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

This is a great idea! Without a pole in my hands, I’m the clumsiest thing you’ll ever meet, and even with a pole any gracefulness is very fake and very practiced. I haven’t been to any kind of dance classes since I was about 5… and my ballet classes consisted of ‘good toes, bad toes!’ (At least I know how to point my toes). So I’d love to soak up as much information as you’re willing to share.
I’ve recently decided that gymnastics are really cool after all the talk on aerial cartwheels a while ago… If anybody else wants to jump in with basic gymnastic tutorials that you could incorporate into pole dance, that would be awesome as well! (I really really love how Suzie Q walks on her hands to swap from one pole to another – she does it here at 5:00 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoEVI4K1774" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) Actually, it would be fun to incorporate any kind of dance into pole work – I’d love to see if anybody else could contribute as well!

I highly recommend everyone watches the dance Demi Moore did in Striptease. She does a good bit of work away from the pole and captivates the audience by performing a very Madonna/Bob Fosse style dance in menswear. It’s a very good example of how you can use the pole more as a prop and not as the sole means of performing (a good idea for those of you wowing men at amateur nights https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif )Ballerinas cant take the barres on stage, so really get comfortable with yourself and do a bit of floor work or short 8 count routines until you feel ready to put a full masterpiece of your own together. Maybe at some point Veena will post step by step tutorials for dances based on level so people can get an idea of how varied skill can always create something wonderful. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I’d honestly love to see some chair lessons https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif not by that lying skank Carmen Electra of course https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif

Awesome idea and very generous offer!
Also agree with Neke that gymnastics are fabulous for pole too – I will have a group of friends of mine who are gymnasts to try my pole and maybe I can learn something with them too – if this happens, I’ll definitely share this here too!
Best!

Like all dance forms and sports, your movement originates from the core. That is your source of balance, stability, and strength. So for those of you struggling with your turns, engage those stomach muscles and "spot". Imagine yourself as a spinning top, a line is running through you from top to bottom, and the more you flare out during your turns, the more your turns will become more erratic and unbalanced, so keep your posture and as always practice makes perfect. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
Also, I will be posting my videos on youtube, once I get them up I’ll let you guys know. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif -
I love this idea too! I’ve been taking jazz, dancehall, salsa and disco classes now and then – whenever I can afford to, and have time – to imprive my dancing, rhythm, movement etc. for pole routines https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
I would love to see a balet beginner video, especially one aimed at pole dancers. Please do make it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
