Beginner Advice
Posted by cnewman12111650 on February 9, 2015 at 12:23 pmHi everyone! If you could go back and tell yourself (or anyone!) who has just started pole dancing, what advice would you give them? Whether it’s do with strength, fitness, shoes, clothes, flexibility etc that would help them improve faster or overcome those growing pains.

Be patient, but also consistent.
And don’t let someone else tell you how you should or should not feel about whatever progress you’re making. Or “not tell you” in a passive-agressive “I’m not happy that you’re putting effort into yourself and not into making me happy” kind of way. But that, of course, is something slightly different.
And also, engage your lats. They’re amazing.

My advice is to enjoy the journey:) let the destination fall to the wayside and just BE. We are all so different physically, chemically , spiritually that no one plan is right for everyone. Your body will tell you what it needs for the most part. I highly suggest that Less is more with pole. My own personal experience was pole was extremely addicting in the beginning… All the yummies that the body creates while exercising was totally new to me and the The joy and expression that came from it, along with all sorts of highs and lows. Nailing moves, getting injured. If i could do one thing different it would be to have taken pole more serious. I just love to dance, so I thought no biggie but the pole is not so forgiving if you aren’t warmed up and paying attention to your body!! Also I found silks and hammock to be great for building Strength. Oh and did I mention Yoga saved my mind and body. Kinda a big fan of breathing and not thinking:) as far as shoes and clothes go make sure you feel the way you want when you pole, set a mood if need be, heels always change things up!! I do believe when I like what I’m wearing (vs what I think I should be wearing while exercising 😉 I enjoy myself way more. Also mirrors are great for checking lines and specifics. However you may find mirrors also can be very bad for the soul if you’re not quite up to par that day, so I like to cover mine up when I need to get back in touch with the real me. Not the flat 1 demensional me that the mirrors a says I am:) also Itube or playtube are great for listening to music without having to download and they plan in the background unlike some apps that have to stay open:) I like to make playlists as i hear songs on pandora. Pretty important to feel your music! Oh fav and only grip aid I’ve tried is tite grip. Love it! How ever I rarely use it, I have a sv lil mynx (have only have powder coated lil mynx) and don’t have any grip issues besides my own weak areas. Can’t use grip aid for that:) ok I’m all outta ideas :):):) hope that helps! Enjoy your journey, it’s sure to be gorgeous one 🙂

BE consistent and be happy with where you are. I got caught up in what I saw OTHER people doing and you know what happened? I didn’t make any progress for about a whole year because I could not accept myself. I ended up withdrawing and made no progress. So, my advice would be to look at others and not feel bad or think, oh man I wish I could do that, or I hope I can do that one day! Look at others and think, insipiration. Don’t worry or think about doing what she or he is doing, and if you can do it or not.
Be content with what you can do RIGHT now. Combine that with being consistent, and you will advance. I basically started over this January, and I am taking my own advice and I can’t believe how much farther I have come already. I’m incredibly happy and excited. I never knew the secret was just to be happy with myself as I am. That’s my advice lol.
As for clothes, yoga wear, booty shorts, sports bra and also, whatever makes you feel good and is comfy. I’m getting my first pair of heels soon and I am excited. I’ve heard Pleasers and Elie’s are good? Also, listen to lots of music, finds music that just makes you want to get up and move around.

I also concur with going slow. I’ve been going to pole about once or twice a week. It’s extremely important to warm up and warm the pole up. I’ve learned that the hard way. I also really enjoy veena’s thirty day take off. Really watch and listen to all her advice about stretches and little things you can do to improve, like practicing pointing your toes, improving hand strength, how to stretch the forearm muscles. You can do that anytime and her video on how to point toes was super helpful. Those little things will matter in the end.

Welcome! If you’re taking classes at a studio, try different instructors every once in a while. When I started, I LOVED my instructor and didn’t know what I would do without her. Then she had to leave, and I LOVED my next instructor too, though she had a totally different style. Everyone will teach you something different. Sometimes you might have trouble getting a move and all it will take is a hint worded in another way. And, of course, Veena is awesome and you get to watch her demonstrate and explain moves as often as you need. Happy Poling! 🙂
