I haven’t hula hooped since I was a child, but I’d love to start doing it for fitness. Can anyone recommend a hula hoop for a beginner? I’m looking to spend under $50 on one. Thank you!

For a beginner try a 38 – 40 inch hoop with a 25mm pipe. It will go slower and give your tummy muscles more time to figure out what they’re doing 🙂

Available from good juggling websites, don’t buy the department store ‘fitness’ ones, they’re so pants 🙂

Also, make sure you get some gaffer on the hoop, not just shiny tape. There’s no need to make things harder than they need to be 🙂

This video may help you. I explain how I make my hoops, I will mention that I no longer by my supplies at Home Depot and such, I just can’t find the tubing there anymore. However, I now use a place called Discount Hoop Supplies, they have great customer service and tons of tubing, they also have pre made hoops. http://www.hoopsupplies.com. If you’re looking for simple instruction for the basics of hooping, I have lessons here. 🙂

If you are interested in purchasing one instead of making one (buying one would be cheaper than buying the supplies), PM me. I can make a collapsible hoop that would (hopefully) ship for a reasonable price! I could check postage before you order. 🙂

Hoop City and Hooping.org (Hoop City being my preferred one recently) have great resources for beginning hoopers. There are a lot of other sites too, but I’m not as familiar with them. Lots of info regarding choosing your first hoop, including sizing and explaining the different materials available. Good luck & happy hooping! Not intending to deter you away from Sparrow, by the way Faye. Research is just a lot of fun and may help you in your hoop discussions. Like pole, hoop can have its on vocabulary and it makes it easier if the people in conversation are both familiar with it. Egads, I’m a nerd! Sorry lol

I went though Hooping.org and got my hoop from Moodhoops (I got the Lucid Beginner Hoop for $54 plus shipping. Actually, my husband found it on my wishlist and surprised me with it but it’s still the same bank account lol.) It’s a pretty good hoop so far though I’m not the best at judging hoops.

Since you said you wanted to stay under $50 I figured I’d recommend DanceHoops on etsy. Although I haven’t purchased from them yet, I have noticed that their reviews are good and they have pretty ok prices. (I’ve been eyeballing the Velvet Victorian and the Black Galaxy hoops. So much want.)

As others suggested you could make your own hoop. Personally- I’ve got too many other things that I’m busy making so having MORE craft stuff in my tiny apartment is just insane and not gonna happen. I think it’s hooping.org that has a tutorial on making hoops and Veena has one as well if you go that route.
