  • Best meal before poling?

Posted by milkjamjuice on April 1, 2013 at 9:47 am

Seems like a "duh," question but I have to ask:

What does everyone eat to energize before poling that won't toss around in your stomach too much?

Now, I usually don't eat much prior to doing so because it tosses around in my stomach but today I hadn't eaten anything I needed my strength; I had just finished one hour of pole and was taking a one hour break before two more hours of pole.  I had a salad and breadsticks thinking it was light enough but it didn't agree so well.

Any tips for when you suddenly find yourself really needing food but it's before a workout?

I like to eat oatmeal with walnuts about two hours before I pole. The two hours gives it time to digest, the protein keeps me full, and the carbs keep me going.

I also like to grab an apple or protein bar right before poling.

I used to go from work to having to teach class back to back and Luna bars/kind bars and a small coconut water 30 mins before class saved me. Light enough you won’t get sick but carby enough to boost your energy.

Fruit with a lot of water in them works out for me. Pineapple, apples, pears. To add a little protein I dip apples in a little natural peanut butter. Plus I got through about 3 bottles of water from the time I eat til the point I finish pole.

For me, the best course is just making sure I eat throughout the day on the day I pole. I can't tolerate any solid food for at least 3 hours after I get up, so I usually have a protein shake, or at least a Slimfast. Then I eat small snacks every 2 or so hours to keep myself full. I always eat my last meal 2 hours before I pole. Usually a good protein/carb mix of some sort. I also take SAM-e at that time. I also try to eat a banana the day I pole to stave off foot cramps. I eat protein as soon after poling as possible.

The one thing I always have in my pole bag for hunger emergencies? A Clif Bar!!!

If I'm poling in the morning, I usually take a banana and trail mix along with me. I don't have a meal before, but instead, I nibble throughout the session to keep the energy flowing.

If it's later in the day, I try not to eat a large meal until after the training. Throughout the day I'll usually have multiple light meals like maybe fruit, salad, trail mix, smoothie etc.
