  • Broken Tibia/Fibula, surgery, recovery and… Pole?

Posted by cheffycakes on May 3, 2014 at 1:10 pm

Hi everyone. I had a spiral tib/fib fracture at the beginning of February (2014) resulting in surgery to insert a carbon fiber rod and 2 screws. I’ve just now (May) been released back to work. I had started pole about 9 months ago from complete scratch, going to a class a week.

Has anyone else had a major injury at the beginning of their pole journey? Is there any advice about how long I should wait before starting it again? I should probably mention that the break was not pole related (snowboarding).

My recovery was a really tough time for me and I was in a pretty deep depression and really started to question some of the ways I consider myself as a person. I’m starting to feel better about things now that I’m reclaiming my life and independence, and I feel like pole would help me further. Of course though, I don’t want to rush and cause additional injury. Seeking advice, thanks for reading!!!

Check with your physician (preferably the orthopaedic surgeon who did your surgery) and your physiotherapist (if you have one) and TELL THEM YOU POLE! You really need to be honest about the activities you want to return to, try to explain what you are doing (use videos and pictures – of yourself or of other people – if you think they would be receptive to that). Pole goes beyond what most people would consider “regular activities” when they are advising about recovery from surgery or an injury. Better safe than sorry. Tib/fib fractures can be nasty. Glad you’re starting to feel better – it’s a tough thing to go through for sure!

Thanks! My ortho surgeon is impossible to get a hold of and didn’t prescribe me any PT (which makes me crazy nervous Bc my walking isn’t going that well). I might talk to my PCP about it.

    dear cheffycakes,
i’ve had a trimalleolar fracture (triple ankle fracture) at the end of march and my cast is going to be removed tomorrow, hopefully starting some rehab immediately. i just opened sv after a long time again, was going to look for advice and found your post. we’re in it together! 🙂
i can very well relate to what you’re writing about questioning your way of life, i’ve had a lot of time horizontally to think about stuff as well, it has not been easy either – and the first thing i thought when i fell (i broke it while dancing, but not on pole) was ‘shit, now i messed up my pole dancing!’. let’s stay in touch and exchange tips, what do you think? as soon as i know from any physiotherapist, i’ll write more… curious to hear about your progress as well! (i started poling in summer ’13, so am also at the beginning of the journey…)
keep it up! all the best, hope you’ll be fine soon!

Please be careful, patient and remember baby steps. I had spine surgery and although I was cleared to do anything at 12 weeks it took a lot longer . I know it’s hard but listen to your body and do other things like walking, cycling etc. simple things can really make a difference as you heal.
