Last week at my lesson my skin was so tender I could barely stay in scorpio. The pain was more intense and was hurting even after I was out of the pose and back on the ground. I wasn’t doing any new moves and I could not figure out why my skin gripping the pole was bothering me so much. Then a few hours later I realized I drank a huge cup of coffee that morning before the lesson. I’m mostly caffeine free but I was tired and thought it would help to have the boost. I remembered being told not to have caffeine before a bikini wax because it makes the skin more sensitive to pain! Aha! Caffeine made my skin more sensitive to pain! Has anyone else discovered this? I’m kind of sad because I like a little jolt before a lesson, but if the caffeine is really the culprit I’ll definitely cut it out before poling.

hmmm, that’s interesting. I have heard that about getting a wax too, not to drink caffeine before.

It could also have been due to time of month. Actually if that was the problem I’d be quite relieved because it is nice to get that caffeine rush before poling. Really helps my inverts lol!

Hmmmm, I know if you take pain relief and coffee together it helps the pain relief work faster and more efficiently but I never heard of caffeine heightening pain. Maybe it does something to pain receptors in some way, who knows? But I can say I too find scorpio very painful, so much so I don’t do it very often which is annoying as I’m working on Allegra. Ouchhhh

Caffeine is known and has been studied to reduce pain and is commonly mixed with pain relievers. Coffee however is a mild diuretic and if you are already dehydrated can possibly lead to skin and pain issues.

I’ve found that dehydration can make your skin more sore and bruise-susceptible, but also, personally speaking, I find my skin is more sensitive at particular times in my cycle as well.

Caffeine dilates your blood vessels . Maybe that increases bruising and pain?

Caffeine actually constricts blood vessels. That’s why it helps for migraines. 🙂

Yes, that would make sense Aerial gypsy. it does do that. I remember when I was getting bad headaches I had to avoid caffeine. and boy you can literally feel the constriction in your brain!

I had tension headaches not migraines.

Yeah I think there may be a connection… drank coffee before class last night and I couldn’t handle the pain and normally I would be fine!

Would you happen to be near your period? Some women get more sensitive to pain near that time.
