So, I have been poling for a little over a month. I am still working on spins and basic things. I have quite a few spins down (fireman, martini, stag, butterfly, fallback, goddess (in progress) & a few others.) I can hold myself up in a V with a split grip. I can climb, not very pretty yet but getting there. Yet, I can't seem to get the basic, already learned spins one-handed. One day, I was able to. But that was the only practice! Am I overestimating myself, here? Or am I ready to go one-handed? Any tips?!

If you are scared or your body is hesitant there is typically a logical reason for it. To get my students into one handed spins we break it down into steps.

    First step:
Mastering the spin it's self on both sides

    Second step:

    unwrapping the bottom fingers

    Third Step:
Taking that bottom/lower hands fingers straight and rotating the wrist so fingers go up the pole. I then have them push away with the their hand on the pole.

    Fourth Step:

Starting of two handed but mid spin releasing the hand down

    Fifth Step:

    Going into it one handed.

Now each spin is different. Spins on the pole are going to be a bit easier and more secure feeling then ones on the side of the pole. Typically the bottom hand is nothing more than a security blanket as the top hand holds a majority of the weight. make sure you are doing both arms and taking the spins in step. Maybe you feel like you will fling off the pole one handed. I did with flying body spiral. so first I practiced chair, then getting my hips in front, then baby hops, then little swings, then I would go for it.

    I hope this helps!

Thanks JLynn! I think fear has a lot to do with it. One day I was just having an awesome pole day, on a roll and did a few one-handed spins. I think it is fear. I am going to try your hints and focus on just one handed spins one day. Thanks so much for your feedback!!!

Fear has to do with a lot, I had problems with the front hook spin, and fear had me doing it all wrong. I let go and kept practcing and I got it : ) sometimes you have to relax and let go

Sorry to hijack, but I can't spin one handed either.  I think mine may be a grip issue though.  As soon as that bottom hand comes off, to the bottom of the pole I go.  My pole is a 50 chrome and that's all I've ever poled on (even in class).  Do you have suggestions?  I'm beginer/intermediate.
