Hi everyone! Some background: my cup grip handspring has been coming and going for a few weeks, I’d say my success rate averages out to about half. I also work (at a strip club) three days in a row, and I stupidly thought I would attempt the handspring towards the end of the third day. Failing the first time, I tried again and failed again. I came down pretty hard on my feet, it wasn’t a controlled landing at all. A few days later, in pole class, I deadlifted a shoulder mount from an angle on the floor, but the muscles around my right shoulderblade (my right hand is the one in cup grip during my handspring) felt a bit strained. I did one handspring later in class, but it made that area feel worse, so I stopped and let my instructor know.

My instructor (who is also a chiropractor) said I probably strained the intercostal muscles (muscles between the ribs) on my right side. It’s fairly minor, but I want to be really cautious to make sure it doesn’t get worse, especially since it’s already feeling a bit worse after pole class. I think I’ve actually had this before on my left and it healed, but I’m also doing more risky pole stuff now, so I feel like extra caution is warranted.

He suggested taking a week off of pole. The problem is, I can’t take a week off of pole entirely, since I need my pole skills in my job. Other than avoiding the handspring (obviously), I was thinking I should try to avoid inverts, shoulder mounts, and ayeshas this week. Instead I thought I should do more climbs-into-leg-hangs (as well as Jade), maybe a caterpillar climb, and some gentle spins with my left arm.

Is there anything else I’m missing, or anything I listed that I should avoid? I want to make sure I’m doing this right, it would suck to have to take more time off.

The list looks good, just make sure that you are careful with climbs too, so you don’t over reach as you climb or lift yourself. I would avoid caterpillar too. Can you focus this week on some killer floor moves?
