Can anyone please give me some advice or a pep talk?

I have been poling for about a year and a half but the last few months I feel like I am weaker than I was a year ago. I am battling with the simplest of moves and my confidence has taken a huge knock. It feels like I am going backwards rather than forwards. How do I get over this? What do I need to do to get back into the happy groove?

I practice about 3 times a week for about an hour at a time. I don't know if my moves are looking worse or if it is all in my head. Why am I battling so much. I love pole and hate that I feel like I can't do it as well anymore.

Has this happened with anyone else?? Any comments or advice is very welcome.

    Thank you!!

When you said you are weaker could you specify an example? Many times we think we are too weak to do certain trick is not because we don’t have the strength , it’s because we haven’t figured out the easy way to do it . just like the best fighter might not be the strongest fighter.

    Two good examples are:

When I first learnt shoulder mount I could do it well, no I battle to do it. Aerial invert is another move that I seem to find more difficult now than when I first learnt it.

New moves that I am finding very difficult and can't get right are hand spring and knee hold, but these I have never done before so I am working on those. I feel that how can I get those right when 'old' moves are suddenly more difficult.

I don't know if I am now not trusting myself because newer moves are taking longer to learn than before (as they would when it gets harder!) and maybe that is why 'old' moves are also suddenly difficult?

I totally understand your frustration, it must suck to lose tricks you worked so hard for …

A few things that came to my mind while reading:

What about your nutrition? Did it change lately?

And how often do you practice those moves that are more difficult now? Did you try to watch lessons, DVDs, whatever, on them to remember the important points that help you get the trick? It happened to me several times that I seemed to have "unlearned" something, but really I just got sloppy with the technique and (re)watching tutorials or dvds helped me to clean them up again ..

And to get back into the happy groove you could just concentrate on dancing for a while doing the tricks that you're still comfortable with https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

I have had times where tricks disappeared and I felt weaker trying to learn new ones. I agree with @Rose‘s advice. Watch a tutorial here or on YT. Sometimes we forget or maybe never learned the subtle points that make a trick easier. Or, just dance. I did that during my last slump and now I do it all the time. It makes me so happy :)) and more accepting of who I am and what I HAVE accomplished vs. what I am struggling with. It’s good to feel good….when you go back to tricks, they come around much easier.

Agree with whatcrystal2011 rose memtioned. I was thinking did you eat well, rest well lately? Are you under pressure lately? Does your diet support and compliment your training ? How long have you been feeling getting “weaker” than previously? Our body is “moody” sometimes, it could be one of those bad days your body chose not to perform. Don’t lose your confidence on pole, enjoy it, it will come back and grow!

Has anything changed in your life?  Stress and a poor diet can cause issues like this, as well as just getting into a rut.  There is another current thread talking about plateaus.  This seems to be the time of year when a lot of people go through them.

Thank you for all the comments. I think I will just dance and enjoy for a while instead of trying to force something. I'll also go back to basics. Maybe I am trying to short cut the routine and missing the important bits that make it easy!!

I will also look at my nutrition, I haven't changed my diet much but maybe I need to! My body maybe needs something I'm not giving it to build more strength. I also have not been sleeping well lately so maybe that is also a cause.

I love the support in this community! It is awesome.
