This is such a great read and I’m so glad you shared it! I’m starting a folder in my future-studio binder labeled “Social Responsibility,” and this is totally going in it! No one should be kept away from pole because of their size!!! Just as the general community, never mind instructors/business owners, we all have a responsibility to help make every student feel welcome.

Roz May has a lesson/ guide for teaching plus size pole dancers on mfeotv.com which I believe is now just UPAtv.com. It is in in the 4 th season of the Body and Pole videos. She teaches spotting techniques, as well as things to think about when teaching a student pole tricks such as accommodating a large breast size, belly , or thighs. Not all bodies can do tricks the same way . She also addresses more personal issues such as body image. I’m not an instructor but I really enjoyed the lesson and I believe it was free.

I ended up googling what Phoenix Hunter was talking about and came across this exact article, written by Roz “The Diva” Mays at http://www.pdbloggers.com/2014/07/dont-call-big-girl-coaching-plus-size-pole-dancers/
It seems this poster is the very same Roz Mays! Here is a link to her video on coaching plus size athletes:

Thank You so much for this. I see myself in nearly all of the responses!!! I am 5’9″ and 185. The only thing I don’t have is large boobs!!! One more strike, I began poling in January at the ripe old age of 56. My instructors, AKA, the pixies,Stealth Ninja, and Warrior Princess, are so amazingly patient, positive and supportive. I am learning to not compare my progression with others in my class even though it is very difficult. I still don’t invert without help, but I am able to climb, sit, and a few others. I truly struggle with self-conscienceness, shyness, and the total lack of anything “sexy” in my being!! The last will need a lot of work. I so enjoy my daily dose of Veena and watching/reading everything. I am so glad that “Hooked on Pole” introduced me to this wealth of information, and bases her fundamentals class by “The Method”.
