Competitions, what do I need to know?
Posted by sundcarrie on November 11, 2014 at 9:30 pmI want to start competing and I started searching for local competitions in 2015. I couldn’t font much near Toledo Ohio. I did find a few that don’t look open to first time competitors. So first how do I find them and second what do I need to know? It looks like I have to learn some rules before attempting to put together routines. I am willing to make an overnight trip but not one that will require air fair….I am saving that for pole expo.

I would get your feet wet with performing at Detroit Aerial showcase. There is also a competition that is Theatrics and Artistry that same weekend. Charley Crystal is the contact person. Cleveland has quite a few showcases as does Columbus. Midwest would be your next best bet and they have everything from amateur to pro. Detroit is typically in late March and Midwest I believe is in July of next year.

I would not suggest competing until you have done a few showcases just because they are really good for getting your stage presence tightened up. I think Mary Ellyn also had a presentational this past year where you could perform and be judged but there were no prises. It was all to get judges feedback.

Also, charley does competition prep. She has competed and knows what the judges look for. She does skype and personal lessons. I would HIGHLY recommend talking to her.

Thank you chemgoddess1. I am sure you are right I will start looking for showcases. I don’t think I will be ready for at least a few months but while business is kind of slow I though I would learn what I need to do in my the most of my training time. I tend to train hardest when I have a goal date and some actual training goals and guidelines.

Cleveland Exotic Dance, Be Studios and Expressions Fitness all have showcases throughout the year. I know the owners of all 3 studios so if you need contact info I can help you out. I know that Infinity in Columbus also has showcases at least 3 times a year, and again, know the owner. There is another member here names SashaMae that is in Toledo. She may know of other showcases near you.
March is The Arnold in Columbus and they now have a competition so there are lots of events that happen that weekend. I am pretty sure Val from Infinity is planning a showcase that weekend.
Charley is also now hosting an event called Secret Sircus which is a pole dance cabaret….a chance to perform without competing. http://secretsircus.webs.com/
Last but not least, Cleveland Exotic works with a lot of the burlesque troupes in the Cleveland area and has performance opportunities. Some of them are fetish shows, just so you know, but are great opportunities to get on stage in front of an audience. You may want to see if there are any burlesque troupes in your area that have a stage pole or are looking for performers.
