I had a friend edit some music for me for a performance. We needed to bring the total time down to 4 minutes. He made me 2 versions, one has the entire song sped up slightly, the other was not sped up but shortened using cuts.

Has any one paid for this type of service before, I’m not sure how much to offer him. When we originally discussed it he suggested $10-15, but I really think he is asking too little. I’m really happy with his work and was wondering what some industry standard prices might be. 🙂

I have a small home recording studio and I’ve done stuff like that for free. Most people with home setups just like doing it as its being creative. Could be he just threw out a number. If you were talking a professional studio, rates range from $25-$75/hour for editing/mixing type work. Not sure which category he falls under.
With the right software (even free) it should not take long. Speeding up can be done in literally two minutes. Editing also can be point and click almost like editing a video in Windows Movie Maker. Really shouldn’t take more than fifteen minutes.

In case anyone wants to edit their own music can suggest two apps:
    Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
    MixPad: http://www.nch.com.au/mixpad/index.html

Audacity is Free but can be overkill and harder to learn but most of you here would not have a problem. MixPad is extremely easy to use but is shareware. Some features are disabled (but does enough for some people) until you buy it $40. If you can use WMM for video you can use MixPad. I own MixPad for a lot of small stuff as its quicker than my advanced recording application.
