    Hello all,

I've noticed that often when I'm dancing and performing any type of 'teddybear' of high kick with my right leg it tends to 'click' and 'crunch' a lot. It kinda feels like there's a 'stop' in it as well and it is a little painful sometimes.

I've had this on and off for a long time but I was wondering if anyone else has experianced similar and if they managed to remedy the problem?

It hasn't bothered me until lately when I've been trying to work on flatline scorpio and the extending from a hip hold position has set it off again. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

    Any ideas?

i have the same thing– prevents me from getting any where near 180 degrees in my straddle split. it sucks, but its the way my body is built and there's clearly something in there that is limiting my range of motion.  we're not all built to be able to do center splits, unfortunately. sorry i dont have more advice for you– if someone has a solution i'm all ears!

I would suggest seeing a physiotherapist to see if there is anything they can do to ease the problem.

I also 'crunch' on my right side, but not at all on the left. My physio manipulated the joint for me this week and definitely made a difference to my movement and the sound effects. I'm still crunching a little, but can definitely confirm the issue has lessened. I am hoping it will continue to improve.

Youch! I get the crunches some days too. Not nearly as bad as you're describing though!

Yoga might be an option for you to open up the hip sockets a bit more and prevent the crackling and crunching. Gentle poses to start focusing on opening the hips with gradual progression 😉

    Just a suggestion! I'm def. not a physio 😉

    Thank you for the replies,

I have already started taking some yoga classes and I have noticed a little improvement, but I still get the crunchiness.

I may well try and get an appointment with a physio, I was meant to have one AGES ago but it took so long for a referral I gave up.

It's good to know I'm not alone on this one though!

    Much love x

I get Crunchy hips too! I have seen or I should say felt, a big improvement in my hips since I started using a foam roller and tennis ball as part of my stretching routine for my hips. In addition to massaging and stretching the front of the body I began working on loosening the muscles of the gluteus and low back as well. My crunching is pretty much gone now!!……unless I sit around all day https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif

Sounds interesting Veena – I'm not familiar with foam rollers but if you have the time to describe in more detail what you're doing as part of your stretch routine I'd definitely be keen to hear!

I'll be adding more stretching lessons at some point and i'll include foam rollers. But if you wanted to pop into the chat room tomorrow ….its friday chat and since I have a broken foot I'll be there pretty much all day. I can turn my webcam on and show you ……its easier than typing out a long description. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Well I'll certainly try as I'd love to see (and please do more lessons, you're an excellent teacher!). Hope to see you then 🙂

I've known quite a few dancers who crunch or pop, one past partner who made her own music when she moved in certain ways. Unless there is some displacement of alignment or pain I've never seen it be a problem. The pop is just the sound of some resilient soft tissue cartilage passing over a condyle or bump on the bone. Another thing worth looking into are bursa fluid sac issues with your joints.
