Dance now…OR save it for later???
Posted by FuzzyNavel on April 17, 2011 at 9:48 pmI'd LOVE to know what Veener's think of this…I have several songs I've kept for awhile in my back pocket and I CAN NOT wait to dance and video them "Some Day." These are great pole songs for me, but my inner hater voice always says, "wait till you are better!" "you can't pull off that song like a GREAT dancer could" *sigh*
So what do you guys do? Do you hold on to "someday songs" OR do you just go for it and make it your own cause you are excited about it NOW and who knows what tomorrow brings??? I am an Intermediate (V's lessons) and getting into the adv. lessons. I still need to edit my vids as I have some serious "dancer's mind blocks" that happens sometimes LOL.
What do you guys think? When are you "good enough" for your fav. songs? Maybe I am crazy LOL. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif

I just dance to anything! I know I'm not close to proper inversions, but you know what? Restrictions breeds artistry, I think, so I'd say…go for it! What if you discover something amazing while you're dancing, like a fancy move you love to do? Great music will always be there to inspire you, so why not use it?
And, besides that, the "wait till you're better" can go sit in the corner. You ARE better. If you feel like you want to do a certain move at a certain point in a song, and you can't do that move yet…remember, you aren't stuck with just one dance per song! You could do thousands of different things to the same song!
I know that, for me, if I "waited till I'm better," I wouldn't end up dancing at all, and it would be sad. I've got huge, high standards for myself, and I have to learn to relax and just do it. So, I'm a big advocate for that from others, too!
In other words…if you love the song, dance to it. You can always change things up as you add more moves to your dancing…or not, if you like it the way it is!

if i'm really and truly into a song, i always, always, always end up surprising myself with a flow or combination that i naturally discover. i think you should dance to the songs now! =)

I struggle with feeling till I get better also. Part of my struggle is mind goes blank, not good with transitions, etc. I have used a couple of monthly challenges to do that, "challenge" myself. The last challenge I practiced and wrote down order of moves/spins. I had my husband call out the list as I performed them. I did have the song for the challenge playing, but edited out the original audo and added the song again. One time a while back, I had the list on the wall, haha
I still hear songs and think "Oh, if only!" In the meantime I do what I can once in a while. I say go for it, as others said, you can redo later and there will always be songs to add to pole list of to dance to. And whatever you are able to do know is good enough, it's all part of the journey 🙂

I like hooks thoughts of doing it now and them redoing it later if you want. You might like having a before and an after to compare later to see how far you've come.

A resounding DITTO to Amy's post. Dance to them now now now!!!!

Absolutely! what they said!
Just last night I moved my ipod player into the pole room. (I've been making myself 'dance' around the living room this last week cause I felt like a total dork in my own body! lol)
I'm only starting week 4 and mostly still just strength training; done two Pole Holds and that's about IT. BUT…
Last night… I felt soooo much more comfortable 'dancing' around the pole. And ya know what? I did a BUNCH of Pole Holds….. I'm Just Sayin;
ALWAYS Go For It. One of my favorite quotes;
"I have no yesterdays, Time took them away; Tomorrow may never be, But I have TODAY." 🙂

I love the before and after idea! I'm also a "wait until I'm better" person, but I also suspect that no matter how good I get I'll still be thinking the same thing. So by that logic, only Felix is allowed to have music, (or insert other dancer, I have no internal scale of top poledancer goodness).
I really hesitate to dance to the songs I really like because I feel like if I'm not perfect I'm being disrespectful to the song or something. But the person who performed the song didn't say "I won't release this until I'm better", or they would have never released the song. So therefore they are not as good as they theoretically could be, so really by providing a backing for my dancing they are being just as disrespectful to me as I am to them…??
These are the things I have to tell myself.
But the arguments of hookedonpole are far mightier than any of my "logic". Thank you everyone for freeing me up to dance to songs I like. Yaaaaayyyyyy!

Ha-ha, so, I'm not the only one! I used to have a whole bunch of songs shelved away for when I got better. I say, let 'em out!! Plus, it would be fun to see how differently you approach the song when you have more moves under your belt. I find that looking back on the early vids – where there really wasn't much going on – there is actually loads of cool stuff that I forgot all about since moving "up" in pole moves.

Thanks SO much for sharing your thoughts on this! You all pretty much confirmed what I want most. I am sick of sitting on my fav tunes and telling myself to wait. 🙂 I thought about it today and one of the songs I LOVE I heard right after I started taking pole classes. WTH? I can do it again someday! I love that. You guys rock. AND I am relieved to read that I am not the only one who suffers from a "dancing block" esp. floorwork–I always do the same stuff!

Do it now and do it again when you get better! 🙂
I just did a dance to a song that I danced to a year ago. And it's really fun to see the improvement. I just made a before and after blog here on SV 🙂
Check it out. 🙂 Would be fun also if more would do the same 🙂
Dance to the same song you did and video it and make a before after blog 😀 1 month/ 6 months/ year / since you first started / whatever 🙂

Also. One more reason to dance to the music now is that you dance better. At least that is the case for me. The more I like the music the better my dance will be. 🙂
