2 other things that will help….shoulder mounting from sitting on the floor (do not use the floor to push off with your butt) and going into a SM stalll and then into a SM. SM stall is basically just getting your feet off the floor in SM grip and holding it there; once you are stalled try getting into SM.

i have a tutorial on the deathlay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjdmWAgMlcA
My pole is top-loading, so I don´t get close to the ceiling. I also do it from a chopper, but you can see that I´m even further away.
It´s also possible from a superman, but the problem is the same as with the chopper: a bit further away.
I learned my Aerial Shoulder Mount, just by trying again and again until I had the strength. I think it´s easier from a superman, because you have a bit more momentum.
I would first learn it from the floor withour momentum, then from superman and then from other poses like Figurehead. Practicing from sitting is others suggested is also a good exercise and you can slowly place your hands higher

I looked at this thread because i am working on ariel shoulder mount, its soo hard. I
have a strong SM, just find it hard working on it ariel as my figure head is rubbish..

you can also practice it from the floor. just pull your feet off the ground (like hangman)
