When I took studio classes I had a really hard time using the mirrors to watch my form especially while doing spins. Is this normal? It doesn’t help that I am a kluts, so I have a hard time doing 3 things at once ie looking at mirror, concentrating on the form of my spin/move etc lol. I want to get past this though because I know that it is extremely important to see form with pole dance. Since I am now taking Veenas lessons at home, I just brought a mirror this weekend. I’m fine looking at it while doing stationary moves/poses ofcourse but those darned spins, I just can’t focus in on that mirror and keep my move graceful at the same time. Any help, tips or advice ladies?

    Thanks!

I always use my cam too as I don’t have a mirror in my bedroom. Its also quite nice to be able to look back on a whole practice and see your improvements over time.

Video your practices. I too can’t do a move and watch it, so I set up my camera and watch it later.

Video is the best way to see what you’re doing and how you look.

That said, mirrors are a great advantage in a studio if used correctly. I feel students shouldn’t be looking in the mirror unless they are steady and secure with executing the move first.

That varies from move to move. You may be fairly secure walking or doing a pivot or backslide right away…some you may need to do a few times before you start looking into the mirror.

spins you will likely take a bit longer to feel steady and sure of yourself. Once you do that THEN you glance in the mirror to check your form.

Either way, you never fully see how you look so the video is the best way but it’s also good practice to get you to stop looking down at your feet and looking up and out – at your "audience".

I totally agree with everyone here. Video your practices! When I got my home pole and stopped going to the studio, I didn’t have a mirror so all I had was my video camera. The only issue is that I have a continuously growing file on my drive, currently it is 20GB!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif (that’s not bad actually, it was over 50 at one point!)

I used to be the same way as far as not being able to watch myself in my spins, and I’m still not great but it does get better with practice. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Dustbunny, I have trouble with my hard drive too, but I find that If i export the files as an mpeg for example, it takes up much less space, then I delete the originals https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I loove mirrors, but I have no big ones at home. However, I did strain my neck badly once while trying to watch myself do a move – so be careful! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Video is great, although I find it can take a while to get aligned to you get the angle you want .
