    Hiya, guys!

So, I, finally back to pole and have gotten better at some other moves, but it seems the move I think is the prettiest always eludes me. Lol. How can I get a perfect reverse grab? One that allows multiple rotations around the pole. One of my studio teachers suggest stepping out farther, but that still only gives me one rotation.  Any tips?!

    Thanks 🙂

There are 2 mistakes that most people make with the reverse grab.  The first is grabbing way too early and the second is making an ellipse instead of a circle.

To correct the first: can you do a one handed chair spin?  This is not the easiest thing because in a chair you are using that bottom arm to keep you pushed away from the pole.  When you do it one handed at some point in time your body is going to come across the front of the pole and your arm is going to twist.  THIS is when you should be grabbing the pole.  Most people will try to grab the pole when their body is still somewhat to the side of the pole and this will kill momentum.

As for the second, the tip that really helped me the most with getting the round vs ellipse was to grab the pole with one hand and start running around the pole as fast as you can.  At some point you are going to get far away from the pole and you will get airborne.  If you look at how your body is, you will notice that you are more facing at an angle from the pole as opposed to straight forward.  (I am not sure if that makes sense).  When you step out you want to step out and away instead of just forward.  When you step just forward you are going to come slamming back to the pole.

I want to say Aerial Amy may have done a write up on this move in her blog.

This is a good one that explains what I was trying to say: http://aerialamy.com/blog/2011/07/26/tuesday-tips-spin-momentum/

This video is really short but if you pause it at about 5 seconds you will see that the free hand does not actually reach around her back but out to the side.  This to me seems to be the #1 killer of this move.  People will put their hand behind their back and grab the pole just as they are starting their momentum which changes the dynamics and kills the spin.  You should be reaching straight back and out to the side, as opposed to behind your back.

Or another way to look at it: If you are doing it with your right hand, wait until your left hip is next to the pole before you reach with your free hand., or vice versa.

Agree with everything here. I didn't really start to get the reverse grab until I switched down to a 45mm pole. My fingers don't wrap on a 50mm, so I didn't have the confidence to get enough momentum and airtime for the one handed chair portion of the spin.

Another thing that helped me was seeing a video of Oona Kivela talking about a more advanced trick, the phoenix. She talked about how big and round the initial spin has to be so you don't bash your head into the pole when you come around. Although I can't do phoenix yet, it's the same idea as reverse grab, with a big circle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Bolo4tOp6Ahttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Bolo4tOp6A

Thanx, ladies!  Amy's tip rally help me get some momentum and I also found my top forearm was slowing me down if I didn't spin properly. I will try waiting to grab the back and I like what the girl on pole dance dictionary did with her legs too. Mine always do this weird thing. Lol
