My friend of mine came over and we were aerial hooping together and she had a minor injury unfortunately. Her face got hit by the hoop after she dismounted from it and she had lacerations in her mouth and right below her lower lip. Thank god the laceration was very small.
    I got to think..
Why does this hoop has to be this heavy duty?
If it hadn’t been that heavy, she wouldn’t have injured herself..

I have an aluminum hoop which is less heavy and it doesn’t spin nearly as well as the heavier stainless steel. I’m pretty sure it would still hurt if it hit me in the face.

I also had an aluminum hoop. It was so light that if you hung from the top of the hoop, the weight would cause the whole hoop to flip over. It was terrifying so I made it heavier.

You tend to find the better quality hoops are heavier, although there are a lot of lighter options out there, you will find as you advance as an aerialist you want the hoop to have weight to it – a lot of this has to do with the centrifugal force of the tricks you are doing, how the hoop spins and how it moves. As you do tricks off the top of the hoop, whether a double or single point, if the hoop is too light then the whole thing will flip on you as it has no weight to counterbalance.

I always wondered how they didn’t flip on performers lol.
