so, has anyone seen his show today. he had a discussion about pole dancing at a school. one of the pole dancers was a 4 year old girl. I expect, some stupid remarks from the general public but I guess I was holding him to a higher standard. I guess I was hoping he wouldn’t let stupid people like Latoya Jackson and a bunch of other unknown “celebrities” spout their ignorance so freely. mad. just mad. usually this stuff doesn’t bother me, but this one got to me.

The BBC covered this story very eloquently: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10152481831663648

    Hope that link works. 🙂

I’ve tweeted my responses to the discussion here as @PoleHarmony to @DrDrewHNL and @latoyajackson: https://twitter.com/DrDrewHLN/status/479911573654220800

Please join in the discussion. I think the more educated responses they get, they might realize their ignorance.

This is just so ridiculous. La Toya Jackson and a comedian whose main video on her website involves her simulating receiving oral sex from a little person are not exactly pillars of morality. D list celebrities hungry for attention.

Would have been nice for them to have a guest opposing their views besides a woman who has tried pole dancing but doesn’t have any other context for it. Good for her for standing up for it and having some sense/independent thought outside of the hypersexualized arena pole dancing is pigeon holed into. Which, not saying there is anything wrong with sexy pole dancing. I love that side of it as much as I love the acrobatic side of it, the point being of course that’s not all it can be.

I wish someone would have brought up Cirque du Soleil or something. Or Olga Trifonova who has been killing it since she was 9 years old and clearly is not sexual at all. Ballet dancing was once synonymous with prostitution, and it’s come a long way since then. People’s minds can be expanded over time and it’s already happening in many countries, as that woman said, and even in the states.

None of these people are anyone I would put stock in their opinion and hopefully more people feel the same than are speaking out.

Yes, Kobajo that is the story. I watched the t.v. show and was just disappointed. Flighter, you said exactly what I was thinking. you have to consider the idiotic source of the comments. I commented on Drew’s facebook. I’m afraid my comments were pretty angry and yes I did bring up videos of Olga and Cirque de Soleil. I was mad that there was no one on the show with any real knowledge of pole that could bring up these points. I was glad that the one woman did take a stand and offer a different frame of reference. Do they really think that the 4 year old was up there grinding on the pole and shaking her ass? They do, don’t they? I really disappointed with Dr.Drew, guess I gave him more credit than he is worth.

What piss me the most is the fact that they are there judging things they don’t know and they made sure not to show what this 4 years old actually did, Or show that 12 years totally killing it. People or so stupid when they rather look at the the bad side rather than what it really is.

We’ve got fireman pole in almost every playground here, i never seen anyone complaining that kids will turn into strippers because of that. Honestly, i would be scare as hell to let my kids with this man, he’s have something pretty fuck up in his head to see anything sexy with that. Yes they spread their legs, so do gymast and at least pole dancer have a good reason to wear short clothe, beauty pageant and some dancing contest don’t have that.

I’m sorry but i’m just going nut about that kind of stuff.

What is really starting to eat at me as a mother of three is teaching our children to pole in a very athletic and graceful manner is taboo but cheerleading competitions where little girls have makeup caked on like an adult and literally shake their butts provocatively is okay.

Johnssdeere, I even made a comment about cheerleading on his fb site. that is a good point. some cheerleading is very adult in content. lots of makeup, and shaking their ass for the team. not all cheerleading I must say, but I have seen it, even in very young ages. not one even bats an eyelash at this.

They just did a story like this in Australia too. It’s brought up a huge reaction from the Aussie pole community

The story in Australia was about the kids classes at my old studio and the interviewers were so rude ignorant and just plain awful. Saying things pole dancing “obviously” has its roots in strip clubs and then refusing to change their stance on that factoid after it was quite firmly but politely explained to them that actually it’s been practiced in China and India for centuries.
The show that ran the story had a poll on their site asking if people would let their children pole dance but it disappeared when the data showed over 50% were fine with it.
These people with preconceived notions based on zero fact who refuse to educate themselves (or be educated by those they interview!) make my blood boil.

uggghhh! MeganJoan, that IS frustrating. you know, I don’t expect the general public to really know much about pole dancing, but I do expect media to do their homework first. but media is about sensationalism and entertainment. they don’t really care to be balanced and informative. when I tell people I pole dance, most get it. they’ve seen performers on America’s got talent, etc. they’ve seen extraordinary pole dancers and understand the atheleticism and skill involved. then some people only think about the pole dance “Fails” video they’ve seen on youtube. I tell those people to watch a real pole dancer, one that can do it right. and then I suggest names of dancers to watch.

Yeah, I’ve had most people be understanding and get it (even if many of them do still make jokes about it then wonder by it annoys me!). I’ve only had one friend not be that way and say it was just hip movement up on a pole after already admitting he’d never seen proper pole dancing. I basically just told him how arrogant he was to presume to know more about my own sport than I did and speak like it as stripper. Don’t think I’ve spoken to him since, haha.

Here is El’s completely brilliant comment to Today after their segement on her studio https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10204037356514107&set=o.130834060284601&type=1&theater

thank you for sharing that link MeganJoan, she said that perfectly. it’s awful what the cameramen were doing to get provocative shots of children in order to sway the viewer-that is exploiting children, not the pole dancing/gymnastics.
