I am so passionate about nutrition since dealing with health issues along with weight struggles in my life….I’ve gained a lot of knowledge trying to research for myself and I really want to pass the info along in a non judgmental and real usable and still yummy way since it can be intimidating and emotional when it comes to food. Of all the books, articles, shows, whatever not many if any just lay it out there as STOP putting that in your body and do this instead to get the same satisfaction in a healthier way or eat this much of that in this way if you have to so you can fuel your body efficiently. Anyway so I was thinking maybe we could help each other out and post little victories if you will or simple food swaps for each other here and sort of what it would “count” as instead of what it would have been if that makes sense. I have a lot of little things here and there so maybe not too many at once but for one that’s having a moment:

Swap Pasta (simple carb) to spaghetti squash (veggie) OR quinoa pasta (GF, complex carb, no sugar)

Swap regular spaghetti sauce (high sugar, fruit + who knows what else) to fresh baby/crushed tomatoes with mrs dash seasoning (GF, low sodium, low natural sugar, VEGGIE) OR cucina antica brand tomato basil sauce (GF, lowest no added sugar, FRUIT )

I hope this may help someone like me just wanting answers without all the confusing-ness to sort through. If nothing else it’s my eat this not that journal version lol

PS my biggest tip is to cut out all added sugar for major & noticeable health benefits. It’s tough and emotional at first but totally do-able and worth it!

You are awesome !! I am on day 6 of a 14 day conscious cleanse (its a gaiamtv one;)… I’m noticing I don’t have a relationship with food, even though I feed my family well. This thread will be great for inspiration. If I have some I’ll share as well:) We followed a paleo meal plan for over a year and my husband had a huge amount of weight fall off… But for me I just stayed not eating really. And then I got all crazy whoa with what’s really happening with our food and I think that shut down my eating even more, but I’ve let that go. I can only afford to do So much and once the knowledge is there recipes are easier ! Also since starting doing yoga I am building a relationship slowly but surely. And cutting out mass amounts of caffeine and sugar is changing how my body processes life !!! Thanks again for this ×)

Wow shoog that is a great way of putting it as shutting down. I have felt the exact same before! I was initially eating what I thought was healthy (see: marketing) and when I realized how horrid that stuff was I just felt so lost and stopped to where I wasn’t eating enough. That backfired real quick to weight GAIN and an unhappy mental state in a starving brain and body – that is no way to live! I’ve realized that real food with the occasional, typically social, treat provides balance not to mention favorable weight benefits. With all the knowledgeable members here I think we will get it right together and figure out a healthy relationship with the food we eat 🙂

The best thing I ever did for my diet was eliminate grains. I’m back to eating them in small amounts (I have steel cut oatmeal for breakfast), but cutting the grains forced me to make better choices. Carrots or other veggies instead of crackers/hummus. I’m not anti-grain or anything, but getting rid of it gets rid of a lot of not so great food. And makes those substitutions like zucchini pasta instead of regular pasta easy.

It was hard at first. Now it’s only hard when I need to eat on the run. Over two years btw, and I still love it!

So true jivete !!! When I cut grains I was almost forced to eat more veggies in their place. Which is a good thing!! I had no idea how much grain I was actually eating till I cut them out. I still eat high fiber oat bran for breakfast though. I also weigh my food too. I really had no idea of what portions and calories I was eating till I got a digital scale. It has become automatic and I can’t imagine eating the way I used to. Just being ignorant. That being said, I don’t eat perfect and i do cheat but nutritionally I have a better understanding. You can’t unlearn what you learn

I feel up very quickly so try to avoid feeling too full and make sure that all my portions are high in good calories but dense that I can handle them in a smallest volume possible. I usually choose quality meats and fish fresh, cook them immediately and follow density rule for my greens (mainly it’s herbs arugula, parsley, dill, chicory, whatever looks fresh to me) Use plenty, thinly chopped with good amount of quality oil and balsamic vinegar. Oils have to be kept in a fridge (rancidity could be the cause of cancer). Never combine meats or fish with a different source of protein. This is my key not to impede nutritional absorption. So your body has a chance to deal with one kind of protein at a time that complex in it’s own. So leave mushrooms, cheese or seeds for another combination.
You can eat any grains in small amount as long as they are not processed. But qiunoa pasta GF is out of question. Good source but it still processed. There many health food products on a market incl. organic, raw and all of that, I don’t buy at all. Because all this goodness is processed. And I know too well what takes to put Organic Spinach Risotto into production. A lot of ingredients we don’t see on the label. But the products have to withstand quality standards. Sorry can’t support that.
I do drink a big deal of various teas but it’s my ritual and I would never cut on caffeine this way. When tea is from a right source and prepared in a right way, also consumed within a right time it provides medical benefit to your health

Wow, I never heard about weighing your food! I’ve read a lot about tracking what you eat and portion sizes, but how do you know how much is the appropriate weight? I will have to try that!

Well an example would be this : 120 grams of my fat free cottage cheese is 80 calories. I just weigh the portion and add until it is 120 grams. This is much more accurate than measuring 1/4 cup. I tried the measuring cup then weighed those contents and it weighed much more than 120 grams. So really I had no idea how many calories or macros I was consuming before I weighed my food. Generally I was consuming much more than I thought. All this adds up over time and you are only guessing if you don’t really know what or how much you are consuming. i use a digital scale. I don’t weigh my veggies I eat as much of those as I want. You really can’t overload calories on veggies. It’s very hard unless you are preparing them in butter or something. So eat as many veggies as you want

Pole slider i guess the short answer is to weigh out portions to whatever the package says a portion weighs.

We don’t have spaghetti squash here in Australia, which is a shame as I would like to try it.
