What I was gonna ask is:
Are there any things that one might do on the pole which requires the elbow grip? Is there anything that can’t be eine using another grip?Or are people using this grip only for an extra challenge?

I love the elbow grip, I feel much more secure with it than my hands. I wish I was better at split grip moves

I just learned a couple moves with an elbow grip in them. One is the elbow bracket hold. It would be the same as a full bracket or forearm bracket just with the use of the elbow on top and the bottom hand it regular bracket form. The second one is like a reverse grab but with your elbows! I have no idea what it's called, but michelle stanek does the move in her winning USPDF 2012 routine. It does work on static but its hard as the momentum keeps you on better, in general i think its quite hard.

I use it because I generally have sweaty hands and an elbow grip is more secure for me 🙂 I used it to get into the ballerina in a performance recently. At about 1:30 here

Ohhh I may need to try the elbow grip/forearm girp.. My hands get sweaty when I pole not matter what. Dry hands and stuff only work so far. I often use my finger cut out pole gloves. Is the Elbow grip and Forearm grip the same thing?????? If not could someone specify please?? 🙂

With forearm grip your hand is still on the pole with your forearm resting on the pole to help stabilize you.
Elbow grip is where you grip the pole in your elbow pit, so essentially your bicep is doing most of the work. It hurts like hell the first time you try it, but like everything else it gets easier and less painful with practice -
Oooohhh Okay, I remember now! I had trouble picturing the forearm grip for some reason. Thanks. 🙂 I need to start getting used to both of those grips.

Yesterday I had my first pole class and the girl who was teaching told us that we should practice the elbow grip since there was a lot of cool moves to to with it, but I couldn't figure out what moves she was talking about since I tghought there might be always another grip-option.
Personally, I don't like the look of the elbow grip (it looks so unfeminine in my eyes), plus it hurt me a lot when i was trying. Good to know that it's not compulsive.

Due to my tight shoulders I cannot get myself far enough away from the pole to do an ayesha in forearm grip; I really need the additional distance that the elbow grip gives me.
There are also a few cool upright moves with elbow grip.

I typically do forearm grip – you can use a forearm grip upright in the air too – Jenyne Butterfly does it a lot.
Forearm grip requires more back flexibility than elbow but elbow requires more core strength and balance in my opinion – elbow grip is safest when you get way far out from the pole – this scares me – hence I do forearm grip because I have the flexibility and can grip for dear life. It varies from dancer to dancer which they like best. The only thing I can think of is elbow hang and that's upright. It's good to be able to perform both grips and if you can't it seems in general best to perform elbow.
