So I’m dancing in my first competition this fall, and I’ve been poling for about three years. My Facebook profile is under my full name, and it’s full of old school friends, exercise friends, and of course, pole friends! My concern is that as a professional, it’s not beneficial for clients and colleagues to be looking me up my name and finding my personal life. It’s not that I’m ashamed to be poling at all, I love to post pics and I want to participate on Facebook with other polers.

I guess my question is what precautions do you guys take, if any, to separate the personal from the professional on Facebook? I’m thinking of changing my name on the site to my first and middle name, so that people who don’t know me can’t search for me by my full name. Does anybody else do this? Do you create another profile for your “pole persona”? I would really hate to separate it out like that, but I’m curious about what are good ideas to try when dealing with Facebook.

I would make a like page for yourself! That way you can put yourself out there, your clients just have to click like, they can still message you and its awesome! 🙂

I have a pole persona page (as well as my regular profile), but now that I have come out of the pole closet to my friends and family, I rarely use it. It was nice to have only pole/Lyra/silks related things on the one profile so I could keep my activities private but it became a pain in the neck to switch back-and-forth between the two.

I have quite a few restrictions on my regular profile. My name is slightly altered so It makes it difficult to be found. Only certain people (close friends, fellow polers) have access to any pictures and quite a few of the pages that I am a part of are closed so the things that I post or respond to are not shared on the wall. If you don’t want the hassle of maintaining 2 different profiles, maybe you should alter your name like you suggested and restrict access to your photos by having them available to only good friends.
