Milla – It’s unlikely that they would send you away with a fracture without telling you – at least I hope they wouldn’t! Based on the history, it sounds like there’s probably a degree of ligamentous injury as well. You might have sprained your ATFL plus or minus your CFL. I agree with what’s been said about the icing – be careful you’re not overdoing it! Do you have a tensor bandage on it? Compression is often more helpful than ice in these settings. Be sure to keep your foot elevated as has already been said. If there’s no fracture, or even if there is one that is only mildly displaced, rest/ice/compression/elevation and pain killers are really the only treatment, physio would help with ankle strengthening if there’s ligament trauma. Either way, the x-rays would only show any fractures, ligament tears are diagnosed on physical exam – again, I’m surprised none of this was communicated to you! Hope you start to feel better soon!
Disclaimer: Not an MD, but I’m a Kinesiologist turned Physician Assistant…have rolled my own ankle many-a-times and have lots of PT/Ortho experience + colleagues in the field. I honestly cannot keep myself out of medical discussions due to curiosity, so feel free to tell me to bugger off anytime 😛
