Feet bruising while climbing
Posted by Jenny99 on August 28, 2011 at 12:00 pmWhen I climb without shoes, I get a wicked bruise on the top of my foot. Any suggestions for adjusting foot position, etc? I end up having to lay off climbing, which just makes me sad.

That happens at first–if you adjust a little to increase the contact with shin and calf, that will subside because you'll be using less foot.

Waht she said! Once you get more used to this you will find yourself using different parts of your legs. When I ma first teaching how to climb I will end up with bruises on my feet because I am doing things in slo-mode but I grip more between my knees and ankles now when I climb.

Yea, I’m new to the pole, too, and bruise there big time. I’ve been at it for 2mo and already see a difference in my strength….I’m hoping soon the bruising will pass. My friend/instructor( not to me) said it took about 9mo. For the bruising to stop.
I’m hoping it stops soon, because I have a Drs appt coming up soon and I’m afraid she’s gonna think I was assaulted since the inside of my thighs are black and blue!

I have been poling for almost 2 years now and I still look like I’ve been abused.

I've been poling for ages and I still get the occasional bruise on the top of my feet – I think part of that is that I'm a runner and my feet tend to swell a bit on the top and get a bit tender so I have to admit that I tend to avoid pole climbing for the sake of climbing (ie. instead of to get somewhere for a move)!

Yeah some moves, it seems, you have to just tough it out but the good news is it gets better. Sometimes I would have swollen bruises that made it look like half a purple golf ball was stuck to my foot! It definitely stops happening though if you do it again and again without shoes 🙂

You may really want to focus on pressing down on the big toe side of the ball of the foot. Try to press the outer edge of the pinky metatarsal (outside edge of the foot) against the pole instead of using the top of your foot. There is only thin skin there and a lot of tiny little bones that you don't want to injure. And don't forget to switch which leg you mount with!

You may wish to take a look at our ankle protectors with tack strips. They have been very well received by both novices and professionals.

Jenny, the bruising will pass!! when i first started, i had terrible bruises (like the tops of my feet were totally purple). but after a couple of months, it just stopped. i never get bruises on my feet anymore. but in the meantime, you might want to get some footundeez! (discount dance supply online has them). 🙂

Yes it's true, when I first stared climbing I was bruise city! Didn't know if I would keep having these bruises forever or not. Well, I still get them.. I'm not sure if it's smaller or the same as before, or if I'm just ignoring them now lol.
I do notice however, that when I'm tired, I get more bruises very quickly! I think because the weight distribution is improper and I'm collapsing my body. But when I'm really energetic and my body is really warm and my body is not afraid to touch the pole… sometimes I'll be poling forever and doing some advance moves and won't get a SINGLE bruise! So it depends on how tired I am.. the weight distribution.. and yes, you'll learn to distribute the weight to your thighs, knees, calf, etc. So there's less bruising on the top of the foot. ex: when ur upper body gets stronger, it's very easy to just place your legs where you want.
