Fingers hurt
Posted by catie on July 21, 2010 at 5:39 pmSince I’ve starting using the pole I’ve been noticing that my joints in my fingers have been hurting and stiff especially when I wake up. Am I gripping the pole too hard? Any tips on lessening/preventing this? Thanks https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

It is normal and will get better as you become stronger and lose the "death grip" hold. Here are some tips that may help.
Warm up the hands…sometime we only think of warming our bodies but we rely heavily on our hands!
Stretch the hands/forearms after your pole session… if your taking the online lessons here is the vid

Not really its more a matter of the hands getting use to the new load your asking them to take on…it will get better. Also be sure your only poling every other day not every day. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Its the death grip like Veena said. I use to get this shooting pain through my knuckles on a couple of my fingers..I swore something was wrong with me until i realized i needed to lay off the grip a little bit lol. Good Luck!

Yep, I got this at first too. In fact, I had started taking piano lessons around the same time I started poling and ended up giving it up because my fingers were too sore to do both, lol. As your hand grip gets stronger, the pain will def lessen. I would recommend stretching the fingers, wrists and forearms with every pole workout.

I know this is an old post, but thanks for this! I have been waking up with sore finger joints in the mornings and was worried i was getting arthritis! Lol. Now i know it is just a matter of rest and time.

I started having sore fingers in the morning when I was learning rope last summer! That death grip will definitely do it. Continuing to strengthen my hands in addition to warming up and stretching throughout the day helped. One excercise that helps get the joints ready is doing finger flicks. Make a tight fist and then flick your fingers out with as much energy as you can, repeating rapidly. I rarely get sore hands or fingers anymore and I'm doing aerials of some kind about 5 days a week.

I started silks a few months ago and my fingers have gotten bigger and hurt thru the night and got so stiff to the point I haven’t been back to class for a few weeks. I think this is just part of learning a new skill where we r holding our weight up by just our hands and fingers. I never had this w pole, but it makes sense and everyone is different.

I got really stiff achey fingers the morning after I poled. I had just started poling and doing lots of spins on my 50mm, I think maybe I was gripping too much, but after a year I changed to a 45mm and hardly have a problem with this now, though my knuckles are definitely fatter from nearly 3 years of poling. 🙂

Lyme, GLUCOSAMINE! When I started aerial silks, I swore I had arthiritis. My instructor insisted I start taking glucosamine daily. So glad I listened. I buy the 2/a day formula because I don't have time to keep up with the ones that want you taking like 6 pills a day! It takes a little while to really set into your system, maybe a week or two, but once it does all your joints will be so relieved. It has even helped the aching I get in my knees when I run.
I'm sure it would also help those who get joint aches from pole.
This is the one I use:
