Not sure if it has a name but I am trying to find a you tube video (have seen before) of flag to shoulder mount rather than shoulder mount. To me it seems like an easier one to start off. Anyone know where I can find a video??

Have you done it? Any tips?

Don't you need momentum to get from flag to SM?  I would think the only way you could have that momentum is to use the energy from the downward drop.  I don't see how you would be able to get from flag to a shoulder mount without a "pop".

Maybe if you could do it aerially/from a hold with the legs extended far forward to get some serious sweep going, but that sounds tough. I don’t know if it would be possible to lift into it from the ground, unless it was lifting into a flag, then swinging the legs forward and back up.

    Too tough for me!

You are in a flag already and then your flip over into shoulder mount, have come across it many times before on you tube but now can't find it. I get the idea of it just need to check I have my hands right before I go doing anything crazy haha

I still use this quick clip of Natasha Wang's. I know hers starts in the shoulder mount and flips over into what she calls a "Shotgun mount", and then flips back to shoulder mount.  But it might help you for now. I've been practicing the shotgun part of it separately as it is more of a swing as opposed to a lift.

Here is the only video I know of this move.  Hope this one helps.

Thanks Pole Raven but that one looks very different. She is flipping over to the other side of the pole the one I mean is you just turn from facing down to up, if that makes sense.

This is a very interesting combo! After watching these videos I think I am inspired to try the flag into brass monkey into shoulder mount posted by pole raven.

This seems much easier to do than the trick that you are looking to do Kylie! It just looks like she does a flag invert with the pole under her left arm and then as she straightens out (left hip should be up) she rotates her body upward and left, so that her right shoulder slides down into sholder mount. She is also changing her top (left) hand position frm facing downward into an upward thumbs cupped grip when she flips, this would be be a fast popping move in order to support the SM.

Good luck though! Those girls down under sure make up some crazy stuff! Maybe check some other NZ or Aussie videos?

I probably should have watched the video you posted as an example before I replied with my video, haha.  But, damn, that flag to shoulder mount version you posted looks ridiculously scary to me!  Best of luck accomplishing that (I would probably pee my pants during an attempt).  That one is hard to find a video for, I looked around, too.

Hey. I've got a video up of my first Fonji, I think the video's called "shoulder mount flip."  What I did to learn it was practice the flipping over part while my feet were still on the floor.  I did this by positioning my body diagonally in the shoulder mount position, with ,my feet on the floor.  In that position, you can roll over into the "catch" position, which is essentially the same as for a half flag or brass monkey invert.  The first few times I did it, I kept my knees tucked- it's much easier that way.  Once you get that, you can work on rotating your legs a split second before you turn over. It's a tough move, and I would encourage you to get a spotter or a teacher, so you don't wind up with a bad shoulder injury.

Just re-read your post and realized you were asking for the other way around.  I've never seen anyone do that by itself, only as part of going back and forth between the two positions, but starting in shoulder mount. I suspect you would need to fall down the pole a little bit to do it, since otherwise you'd have to have incredible stregth to flip up into the shoulder mount.  If you can already do it from a shoulder mount to a flag, try going back and forth.
