I think I might be sorta weird in that I find poling easier as the pole gets smaller.

I'm 5'1" (barely) and have a friend who has a 40mm Chrome.  I LOVE THAT SKINNY POLE.  Everything seems so much easier on it!  I have a 45 at home that I really like, too, and haven't touched a 50 in MONTHS.  The only drawback to the 40 for me is that it leaves me with some WICKED bruises…  But I'll stop bruising eventually, right?

Besides hand size I'm wondering if anyone has looked at how a smaller pole might be better suited for peole with shorter femur bone lengths.  My rotation in the socket dodes not turn out as far as I would like and the thicker 50mm really impeeds the top knee crossing over the bottom knee, even in a pole sit.

Yep, I agree Stoney, this is why I thought asking about height/body size might be helpful. I think over all body size is important hand size can vary even if you're tall. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

I’m in love with mine. I’m 5’2 with small hands and, like a lot of other girls have said, I can grip much better. I have found that it’s easier for me to get certain body positioning on the 40mm. I still practice on a 45mm when I’m at the studio (she doesn’t have a 40mm, yet) I like that I can jump from each size with little trouble. When I’m home the moves I couldn’t quite get at the studio seem to be easier.

Hey does anyone with a 40mm find handsprings especially TG handspring easier on the 40 compaired with 45 or 50? I’m contemplating getting a 40mm for this very reason. I have been trying my TG handspring for nearly a year now and getting nowhere at all, I need to use a 45 when I practice it but think my grip could be better, it just doesn’t feel secure. Iv gotten it into my head if my grip was more solid I’d have more strength to get mysel into the move. What do you think? Does it make a difference or is it wishful thinking on my part? X

I'd really love to try a 40mm! I'm thinking about getting one also, so thanks for the post and the input everyone!
I have the 45mm at home and remember being at my instructors studio- which had 50mm poles – and having a lot of difficulty. When I got home I'd practice on my 45mm, and I could do much more on mine than on the larger ones!!
oh, and I'm 5' 2", with fairly small hands.

I love my 40mm xpole! (I keep raving on and on about it). We use 38mm at the studio I go to and I feel that 40 isn't a huge increase to make that much more of a difference. I think I prefer the 40mm just because I have skinny chicken legs and feel more secure with that extra 2mm. My thigh gap is bigger than the pole at the studio so I have to squeeze extra hard in some moves.

I can't even imagine dancing on anything bigger. Oh, and I'm 176cm. So 5'9.5"

amberpoledancer – I would think it would be easier! I have a 50mm chrome & I can handspring (cartwheel & TG) on it…. I went to the local park recently and tried on a pole on the kids playground (it was MUCH smaller, maybe 40 mm?) and I nearly flipped myself into the pole because I was used to working harder on a 50! It was SOOO much easier, almost completely effortless. I was startled but happy haha, I think I am going to purchase a smaller pole now!

@PilatesPoleKat: How tall are you please? And would you say you have average hands? I am 5'8" and have long fingers. When I grip a 50mm object,  there is roughly a half inch gap between in thumb and index fingers. I have only been poling for a month, but want to buy one soon.

    Thanks

Check out my album comparing a 50, 45 and 38. It compare them to my hands as well.

I enjoy my 50mm because it is easier on the leg holds… but my next pole will definitely be smaller…maybe a 40!
